Science and the meaning of life in a time of disenchantment

Sociologist Bernardo Sorj, visiting professor at the IEA-USP, will be the speaker at the seminar Science and the Polytheism of Values, on April 8, at 9:30 am (GMT-3). The debaters will be Alfredo Bosi, editor of the "Estudos Avançados" journal, and Enrique Larreta, from the Cândido Mendes University. The meeting is the opening seminar of the cycle "In Search of Lost Meaning: Interdisciplinary Dialogues on Science and Transcendence".

The challenges of justice in face of social change in Brazil

Jurist Andréa Maciel Pachá will give the conference Life is Not Fair on April 28, at 3 pm (GMT-3). The focus will be on family conflicts she has brokered as a magistrate, addressing the expectation of "fair" in face of affection and helplessness within the limits of State action and the alternative forms of settlement of disputes. The event inaugurates the cycle of conferences Carioca Afternoons: USP Listens to Rio de Janeiro.

The dialogue between science and traditional knowledge for biodiversity conservation

The debate "Visual, Popular and Scientific Narratives: Traditional Peoples and the Challenge of Biodiversity Conservation" will take place on April 9 and 10. The meeting will emphasize the need for a cooperative dialogue between scientific and traditional knowledge, with focus on designing a kind of biodiversity conservation that is sensitive to the values of social justice, popular participation and sustainability.

The connections between the work of art, aesthetic appreciation and “to be moved”

At a conference given on March 20, Winfried Menninghaus dealt with the results of a series of studies held at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics, of which he is the founding director. His objective is to investigate what "to be moved" by something means in the context of aesthetic appreciation from the analysis of the psychological, neural and sociocultural bases of perceptions, evaluations and aesthetic preferences.

How the IEA-USP coped with a reactive year

The report presents the most important activities carried out in 2013 by research groups and visiting professors of IEA-USP's headquarters in São Paulo and by the hubs of Ribeirão Preto and São Carlos, as well as the institutional achievements, in particular the ones related to the Institute's journal. The highlights are the internationalization program, the institutional critique activities and the reflection on national and international relevant events.
