Conference addresses changes in the relationship between man and nature

The Human Being and Nature is the theme of the conference to be given by Ricardo Abramovay, professor of USP's Economics, Administration and Accounting Faculty (FEA), on September 3 at 3 pm (GMT-3) in the Congregation Room of USP's Institute of International Relations (IRI). This will be the third meeting of the cycle In Search of Lost Meaning: Interdisciplinary Dialogues on Science and Transcendence, coordinated by Bernardo Sorj, visiting professor at the IEA-USP.

Martí Peran talks about how to transform  the feeling of fatigue in an art exhibition

Art critic, curator and professor Martí Peran, from the Universidad de Barcelona, will give the conference How to Convert Fatigue in an Art Exhibition? on September 8, at 3 pm (GMT-3), at FEA-USP. Peran believes that "fatigue may represent an opportunity for the awakening of consciousness, the inflection point from which a process of emancipation begins." The event has been organized by IEA-USP's Fórum Permanente: Cultural System Between Public and Private Research Group.

Sequelae of the apartheid among South African emigrants

Victims of racism that have left South Africa during apartheid undergo specific psychosocial processes of identity construction. The topic will be discussed by Christopher Sonn, professor at the University of Victoria, Australia, at the conference The Apartheid Archive: Racism, Memory and Belonging among South Africans in Australia, which will take place on September 9 at 7 pm, at the Institute of Chemistry. The event has been organized by IEA-USP's Intercultural Dialogues Research Group.

Estudos Avançados issue 81 Examines Labor, Employment and Income

A dossier comprising 16 items of issue 81 of IEA-USP's journal Estudos Avançados provides data and analysis on topics such as changes in work; expansion of the middle classes; vocational training; persistence of jobs similar to slave labor; paradox between low economic growth and greater supply of jobs; transnationalization of labor; and the union's view over legislation, minimum wage and reduce of unemployment.

Octavio Paz and Intellectual Independence in Defense of Freedom and Democracy

The trajectory of Mexican poet and essayist Octavio Paz's political thought was presented by Francisco Javier Garciadiego Dantán, president of the Colegio de Mexico, in conference on July 31, commemorating the centenary of the writer's birth. Celso Lafer, president of FAPESP, and historian Carlos Guilherme Mota, director of USP's Brasiliana Library, were the commentators of the event, which was coordinated by Jorge Schwartz, director of the Lasar Segall Museum.

Echoes of Slavery in the Brazilian Work Ethics

Sociologist Adalberto Cardoso, professor at UERJ, gave a conference on August 4 on the transformations of work ethics in Brazil. For him, the slave regime has been the main element of the ethos of labor relations in the country. The event has been the third meeting of the cycle Carioca Afternoons: The University of São Paulo Listens to Rio de Janeiro, organized by Renato Janine, professor at FFLCH and coordinator of IEA-USP's The Future Questions Us Research Group.

IEA-USP chooses 16 candidates for Intercontinental Academia's final selection

IEA-USP's Scientific Committee for the Intercontinental Academia has chosen 16 of the 44 enrolled candidates in the Brazilian pre-selection. The selected ones have until August 31 (Sunday) to complete their inscription for the final selection phase, which will take place in September at the headquarters of the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies during the meeting of the Senior Committee which coordinates the project.

Bororo crowdfunding campaign

September 15 is the deadline to contribute to the campaign created by anthropologist Massimo Canevacci, visiting professor at the IEA-USP, in order to raise funds to support the traditional funeral of the Bororo's master of chants José Carlos Kuguri.
