Luiz Eduardo Soares argues the demilitarization of police and a democratic agenda in security

For the political scientist, both society and the State have changed significantly since the promulgation of the Constitution in 1988, but the democratic transition has not been extended to public security. Professor at Uerj and former National Secretary of Public Security, Soares will give a conference on May 13, at 3 pm (GMT -3), on the issue. It will be the second meeting of the cycle Carioca Afternoons: USP Listens to Rio de Janeiro.

Richard Williams talks about the increase of research on social innovation

Professor and one of the vice-chancellors of the University of Birmingham, Williams will present two cutting edge researches on social innovation at a conference on May 12, at 3.30 pm (GMT -3): a method of domestic or industrial water-free washing focused on energy saving, and energy storage in liquid air for the propulsion of vehicles and refrigeration. It is the second activity promoted by the IEA-USP in partnership with the Institute of Advanced Studies of the British university. Both institutes are members of the University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (Ubias) network.

The many faces of the new era of hydroelectric generation in the Amazon

Which social and environmental conflicts and challenges exist to the intensification of planning hydroelectric dams in the Amazon? Which experiences in local development, environmental protection and analyzes of extreme weather events represent opportunities in the hydroelectric planning of the region? These two issues will be addressed at the seminar Amazon: The Old and the New Brazilian Hydroelectric Frontier, on May 14, at 2 pm (GMT-3).
