The impacts of biotechnological advances in the human condition

The Human Being and Technique is the theme of the seminar to be held on October 8, at 3 pm (GMT –3). It will be the fourth meeting of the cycle In Search of Lost Meaning. The exhibitor will be psychoanalyst and psychiatrist Claudio Cohen, a professor at USP's Faculty of Medicine, who is an expert in bioethics and clinical bioethics. The debaters will be economist Gilson Schwartz, a professor at USP's School of Communications and Arts (ECA), and political scientist Maya Mitre, a researcher at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Moderation will be in charge of political scientist Bernardo Sorj, a visiting professor at the IEA-USP and coordinator of the cycle.

Thinking of a new model of university

Civil engineer Luiz Bevilacqua, professor emeritus from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), will give the conference The University in a Time of Culture Shock on October 10, at 3 pm (GMT –3). For him, the academic and pedagogical structure of the universitary system has not been meeting the new demands emerging in the context of knowledge production. This will be the fourth event of the cycle Carioca Afternoons: USP Listens to Rio de Janeiro, organized by Renato Janine Ribeiro, coordinator of IEA-USP's Research Group The Future Question Us.

The future of politics in a scenario of personal relationship crises

The third seminar of the cycle Life Today: Love, Art, Politics has been entitled Is Politics Draining Away? Organized by IEA-USP's Research Group The Future Questions Us, the meeting will take place on October 14, at 3 pm (GMT –3). The exhibitors will be philosopher Renato Janine Ribeiro, a professor of USP’s Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences (FFLCH) and coordinator of the group, and anthropologist Massimo Canevacci, a visiting professor at the IEA-USP. The discussion will address issues such as the future of politics in the present context of deep changes in personal relationships.

Artur Ávila's Fields Medal and the Brazilian School of Mathematics

In order to historically contextualize the award won by Brazilian researcher Artur Ávila, the IEA-USP and USP's Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME), with support from the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (ICMC) of USP's campus in São Carlos, will hold the seminar Artur Ávila, the Fields Medal and the Brazilian School of Mathematics on October 15, at 2 pm (GMT –3). The exhibitors will be three researchers from the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA), from where Ávila has graduated: Marcelo Viana, Maurício Peixoto and Welington de Melo. Moderation will be in charge of Edson de Faria (IME).
