USP honors mathematician Artur Avila, Fields Medal winner in 2014

Artur Avila, winner of the Fields Medal in 2014, an award considered the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics", will be honored on December 10 at a session at USP's Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library, as a joint initiative of the IEA-USP, USP's Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME) and USP's Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (ICMC). It will be the second event in honor to the medalist organized by the three institutes. The first one was the seminar Artur Avila's Fields Medal and the Brazilian School of Mathematics, on October 15. The session on December 10 is part of the I Brazilian Congress of Young Researchers in Pure and Applied Mathematics. The opening ceremony will take place at 9 am (GMT -2). At 9.30 am (GMT -2), Avila will give the first conference and at 10.30 am he will participate in a conversation with mathematician Jacob Palis, also a researcher at Impa, where he has been director, and current president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

IEA celebrates its honorary professors

Biophysicist Gerhard Malnic, a professor at USP's Institute of Biomedical Sciences (ICB), and physicist Alberto Luiz da Rocha Barros (1930-1999), former professor at USP's Physics Institute, were nominated honorary professors of the IEA by the Board in September 2013. On December 15, at 5 pm (GMT -2), both of them and other honorary professors will be honored by the Institute at a ceremony for guests in the meeting room of USP's University Council. The tribute speech will be given by Alfredo Bosi, former director of the IEA and editor of the "Estudos Avançados” journal. Physiologist Rui Curi, also a professor at the ICB, and historian Carlos Guilherme Mota, first director of the Institute, will make a retrospective of the careers of Malnic and Rocha Barros.

“Estudos Avançados” and “Scientiae Studia” journals will be at USP's 16th Book Festival

IEA will take part in the 16th USP's Book Festival, from December 10 to 12, from 9 am to 9 pm (GMT -2), at the Polytechnic School (Poli). 145 publishers will participate offering discounts from 50%. IEA's booth will be number 9 in the building of Mechanical Engineering. Issues of “Estudos Avançados” and "Scientiae Studia" will be sold for special prices. The fair is sponsored by Edusp (Publisher of USP) and Poli, with the support of USP's Office of Prevention and Protection and the University Hall.
