Estudos Avançados reaches first place of SciELO's ranking

The IEA's journal Estudos Avançados is the most accessed among the 280 publications that comprise the current collection of the national base of SciELO since its inception. The new top 10 most accessed journals were made known on November 9. In the annual statistics of SciELO, the Institute's journal already held the top spot since 2013. Since it was indexed in 2004, Estudos Avançados received more than 29,5 million visits, equivalent to 2.5% of all accesses registered by the base to date.

INTERCONTINENTAL ACADEMIA

Participants of the Intercontinental Academia gather as a preparation to Nagoya

Senior committee members and young researchers of the first edition of the Intercontinental Academia will meet in the end of the month for an interim workshop. Held seven months after the first immersive meeting in São Paulo, which has inaugurated the project, this encounter in Munich will enable the participants to advance the discussions and studies being conducted virtually since May, and plan activities for the meeting in Nagoya next March. The Intercontinental Academia is a program of the UBIAS network, which brings together 36 institutes for advanced studies from all continents.

Researcher indicated by the IEA is selected for the second edition of the Intercontinental Academia

The Scientific Committee for the second edition of the Intercontinental Academia gathered in late October and chose lawyer and human rights activist Akemi Kamimura to be one of the 21 young researchers members of the project. She was one of three Brazilians indicated by the IEA to participate in the second edition, which will address the theme Human Dignity. The organizers are the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZIF) of the University of Bielefeld, German, and the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Seminar addresses the impact of climate changes in megacities shortly before COP 21

The impact of climate changes in megacities is the subject of the fourth meeting of the cycle Towards COP 21: The Groundwork to Paris – Climate Change, Adaptation, Solutions and Opportunities. The debate will take place on November 19, at 9.30 am, at the IEA, addressing sustainable mobility, public health and growth planning. The panelists will be Luiz Firmino Pereira, from the Rio de Janeiro's State Government, and Silvio Barros, from the Paraná's State Government. Coordination will be in charge of Tomas Alvim and Marisa Moreira Salles. The series of debates aims to make a contribution to the Brazilian government for the country's participation at COP 21, which begins later this month in Paris.

Content director of the Estado Group discusses the transformation and fragmentation of traditional media

The transition from traditional media to digital media has been causing a deep fragmentation of communication platforms. To discuss whether this fragmentation may lead to weakening and dispersion of classical structures of journalistic organization, the content director for the Estado Group, Ricardo Gandour, will speak at the seminar Transformations and Fragmentation of the Structures of Traditional Media, to be held on November 25, at 10 am, in the IEA's Events Room. He and three further commentators, including journalist Eugênio Bucci, head of the Social Communication Superintendence of USP, will question impacts of this change, possible consequences to democratic societies and what can happen to the business models that support professional journalism.

Symposium addresses issues related to the migration of people

At a time when the world is questioning how to deal with refugees from war and hunger, and how relations among cultures may coexist in the same territory, the IEA’s Intercultural Dialogues Research Group will hold a symposium on Refuge, Return, E/Immigration: Languages, Identities, Mental Health, Beliefs, Territory. The event will take place on November 27 in the former room of USP’s University Council, from 9 am to 6 pm.

International Seminar Discusses the Judiciary, the Press and Public Safety

Researchers from Brazil, Argentina, Chile and the United States will meet at the IEA on December 3 and 4, from 9 am to 6 pm, for a comparative analysis of their countries’ democratic principles, institutions and political participation. Organized by USP’s Public Policies Research Center (NUPPs) and the IEA’s Quality of Democracy Research Group, the international seminar Quality of Democracy, Institutions, Agents and Public Policy will analyze the penetration and effectiveness of democratic concepts in institutions such as the press, the Judiciary, laws, public policy and social movements.
