Specialists evaluate the impacts of the environmental disaster in Mariana

Five professors of USP, covering various disciplines, will be at the IEA on December 7, from 2 pm, to discuss the impacts of the disrupted dam of the miner Samarco in Mariana, in the State of Minas Gerais. They will also address what needs to be done for the environmental recovery of the affected areas. This is considered the largest environmental disaster ever occurred in Brazil and one of the five largest in world history. The meeting will be held in the former room of the USP's University Council.

Meeting discusses the development of drugs and medicines at USP

The development of drugs and medicines at USP will be the theme of the third strategic workshop of the University's Dean for Research, which takes place on December 10, from 10 am, at the IEA. Carried out with IEA's support, the meeting will bring together experts from the university and the private sector. The workshop has the intent to stimulate reflection and dialogue around the strategic themes for research at the University of São Paulo. It also seeks to create a scientific and technological environment of collaboration between the USP community and external agents.

Fernanda De Negri, co-organizer of the second volume of Produtividade no Brasil: desempenho e determinantes ("Productivity in Brazil: performance and determinants"), will be at the IEA on December 9, at 2.30 pm, to address the main ideas discussed in the book's 19 chapters (written by 37 scholars). The study shows that productivity growth in Brazil over the long term is subject to expansion investments in technology and information, infrastructure, qualification of manpower and the improvement of the business environment.

IEA's board member Guilherme Ary Plonski has been appointed to the Academic Council of the Espacio de Estudios Avanzados (UCREA) at the Universidad de Costa Rica (URC). The institution was the first IAS created in Central America, in August 2014, after more than two years of study with the participation of Costa Rican researchers and foreign institutions, such as the IEA. It has the University of Bielefeld's Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) as a reference.
