IEA launches USP's first chair on art and culture

The IEA officialy launched the Olavo Setubal Chair of Arts, Culture and Science last week in partnership with the Itaú Cultural Institute. The first chair holder is diplomat and essayist Sérgio Paulo Rouanet, former National Secretary of Culture and author of the cultural incentive law that bears his name. The goal is to foster interdisciplinary reflections on academic, artistic, cultural and social issues of regional and global scope.

Seminar addresses challenges of participatory democracy

"The Challenge of Participatory Democracy: Brazil, Portugal, Spain" will be the third meeting of the IEA's Laboratory of Global Megatrends and Challenges to Democracy. Coordinated by Portuguese political scientist Álvaro de Vasconcelos, the event will address themes such as the crisis of representation and the requirement of participation, social networks and civic action, among others. The guests will take turns in several thematic roundtables on February 26, from 10 am to 6 pm. The debates will take place in the IEA Events Room and will be moderated by Pedro Dallari, from the USP's Institute of International Relations (IRI), Martin Grossmann, director of the IEA, and Vasconcelos.

Georges Jean Marie Gaillard discusses death drive and traumatic repetition in institutions

Professor of psychology Georges Jean Marie Gaillard, from the Institut de Psychologie of the Université Lumière Lyon 2, participates in a three-day seminar at the IEA this week. The workshop "The Society of Undifferentiation: Identity, Trauma and Mythical Violence" begins on February 22 and continues for the next two days in the former room of the University Council. The event will be broadcast live on the web and is organized by the IEA's Research Group Humanities and the Contemporary World, coordinated by Professor Olgária Matos, from the USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH).
