Francisco Zapata discusses Mexico’s development models

Sociologist Francisco Zapata, a professor and researcher at the Sociological Studies Center of El Colegio de México, will give two conferences at the IEA-USP on the relationship between development models and transformations of Mexican society. OnJune 9 the theme will be Tiempos Neoliberales en México, while on June 11 it will be Ciencias Sociales y Desarrollo Nacional en México. Both meetings will start at 2 pm (GMT -3) and are organized by the IEA-USP in partnership with El Colegio de México.

Panel discusses Brazil’s role in the biodiversity conservation agenda

Brazil's contributions and strategies for the sustainable use of biological diversity will be discussed at the panel The International Biodiversity Conservation Agenda and the Role of Brazil, which takes place on June 11, at 10 am (GMT -3), in the auditorium of USP's Superintendence of Technology and Information (STI). The event will particularly address the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services work program, and the challenges and opportunities of the Biological Diversity Convention agenda, both linked to the UN.

International seminar brings together different research lines on animal behavior

Researchers from Canada, the USA, Germany, the Netherlands and Brazil will gather at the seminarBrain, Cognition, Behavior, Evolution: Polyglot to Monoglot?, that the IEA-USP will carry out from June 15 to 17 with the coordination of visiting professor Jerry Hogan. The purpose of the meeting is to promote a dialogue between researchers with different approaches on common research topics.

Latin America analyzed from the viewpoint of political science

On June 18, at 4 pm (GMT -3), social scientists will analyze Latin America from the perspective of political science. It will be the second meeting of the cycle Latin American Identities, organized by the IEA-USP. The conference Latin America of Politicswill feature an exhibition by sociologist José Maurício Domingues, from the Institute of Social and Political Studies of the Rio de Janeiro State University (UERJ). The panelists will be political scientist Adrian Gurza Lavalle and sociologist Simon Schwartzman. The coordination of both the meeting and the cycle will be in charge of Bernardo Sorj, a visiting professor at the IEA-USP.

INTERCONTINENTAL ACADEMIA

Germany and Israel coordinate the second edition of the Intercontinental Academia

Human dignity is the theme of the second edition of the Intercontinental Academia, to be held in March and in August, 2016. Organized by the institutes of advanced studies of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and of Bielefeld University, the project has started the open call for the selection of 15 participating researchers.

JOURNAL

'Estudos Avançados' Journal discusses the identity of Brazilian archeology

The key issue debated in the dossier 'Aspects of Brazilian Archaeology' of issue 83 of the journal 'Estudos Avançados', that has been recently released, is whether there is an original Brazilian contribution to the discipline. The question has been raised by Eduardo Góes Neves, a researcher at the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology (MAE) and organizer of the dossier. Neves's arguments have been commented by Ulpiano Bezerra de Meneses, a professor at USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH).
