Conference addresses interdisciplinary organizational structure in universities

German sociologist Peter Weingart will be at the IEA on July 28, at 3:30 pm (GMT -3), as the main speaker of the conference Interdisciplinarity and the New Governance of Universities. Weingart will focus on deeply institutionalized forms of producing knowledge and rigid organizational structures, enclosed in departments and faculties. To enrich the discussion, he will present cases of universities committed to modifying their organizational structures as a way to optimize responses to new problems facing science and society.

INTERCONTINENTAL ACADEMIA

Registration for the 2nd Intercontinental Academia through IEA ends August 6

Researchers who wish to investigate the subjectHuman Dignity in the second Intercontinental Academia (ICA) should register with IEA by August 6. Organized by the Institute for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, and by the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University, Germany, the first stage of the project will be held from March 6 through 20, 2016 in Jerusalem, Israel. The second stage will take place from August 1 through 12 in Bielefeld, Germany.

Identity-based nationalism in focus

A debate held by the IEA on June 24 brought together scholars to discuss The Challenge of Identity-Based Nationalism focused on three regions of the world. Political scientist Álvaro Vasconcelos spoke about the growth of far-right parties in Europe; historian Arlene Clemesha addressed the emergence of the Islamic State in the Middle East; and Leandro Karnal, also a historian, discussed the issues of nationalism and identity in Brazil. The conference was the first one of the Laboratory of Global Megatrends and Challenges to Democracy, organized by the IEA and the IRI-USP and coordinated by Álvaro Vasconcelos.
