INTERCONTINENTAL ACADEMIA

Registration for the 2nd Intercontinental Academia through the IEA postponed to August 23

The IEA has postponed the deadline for Latin American young researchers to apply for the pre-selection of the 2nd Intercontinental Academia to August 23. Organized by the Israel Institute for Advanced Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and by the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) at Bielefeld University, Germany, this second edition will take place in March and in August, 2016, having Human Rights as its theme.

AGENDA

Seminar at the IEA will discuss the role of economists in the formation of the Latin American identity

The next encounter of the Latin American Identitiescycle will be held on August 18, at 4 pm (GMT -3), with exhibition by Ricardo Bielschowsky (UFRJ). He will summarize the evolution of the thinking of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the “main center for formulating ideas about Latin America since its founding”, according to him. The Latin America of the Economists will have Fábio Santos (Unifesp) and Márcio Bobik Braga (USP’s FEA-RP), as panelists. Moderation will be in charge of sociologist Bernardo Sorj.

2nd edition of the debate cycle on Amazonia receives registrations until August 16

August 16 is the final date for registrations for the second edition of the debate cycle Dialogues about Amazonia Today: Workshop of Ideas and Proposals, which will start on August 19 at the IEA. With 40 positions for post-docs and post-graduates, the cycle aims to expand multidisciplinary discussion of the current context of the Brazilian and South American Amazonia, and to deepen and disseminate awareness of some of the topics covered in the first edition of the event, held from April to June.

REPORT

The challenges to interdisciplinarity

German sociologist Peter Weingart has visited the IEA-USP and defended the organizational restructuring as essential to consolidate the interdisciplinary model of research. For him, in addition to adopting new ways to organize fellows, disciplines, and teaching and research units, interdisciplinarity requires a solid epistemological foundation: “Without the good internal reasons pertaining to the development of science and without a willingness to deal with problems outside specific areas, it will not succeed”.
