AGENDA

Gerardo Caetano addresses the impact of cultural policies in development

Gerardo Caetano, from the Universidad de La República, Uruguay, will be the main speaker of the seminar The Cultural Policies as Indispensable Variables of Development, on September 22, at 2:30 pm, at the IEA. According to him, it is a mistake to believe in the possibility of making cultural policies without politics and that one should repel the demagogic choice of a populist vision with a simplistic identification of popular culture with culture. To debate with the invited speaker, the event will feature three professors of the USP's School of Communications and Arts (ECA): José Teixeira Coelho Netto, Lúcia Maciel Barbosa de Oliveira and Martin Grossmann (director of the IEA).

Meeting discusses the work of Teixeira Coelho, who will be honored

The School of Communications and Arts (ECA), with support from the IEA and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC), will hold on September 23, at 2:30 pm, a meeting on Expanding the Being’s Sphere of Presence: Reflections on the Work of Teixeira Coelho, which will precede the ceremony to bestow the title of Professor Emeritus to José Teixeira Coelho Netto, professor at ECA’s Department of Library Studies and Documentation, for his significant work and intellectual career. The event will be held in the Auditorium of the MAC, in USP’s Butantã campus. The ceremony (open only to guests) will take place at 6:30 pm in the same venue.

Workshop will bring together USP’s electrochemistry researchers

The University of São Paulo’s dean of Research, with the support of the IEA and of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo (Aciesp), will hold a workshop on Energy, Sensors and the Environment: Electrochemistry at USP on September 21, from 9 am to 6 pm. The seminar’s goal is to articulate scholars from the University of São Paulo working in the field of electrochemistry. Approaching the relation between the theme and the environment, the exhibitions will address sensors in the morning and energy in the afternoon.

Spanish sociologist discusses the dialectic of structure and the environment at the IEA

Antonio Aledo Tur, a sociologist of the Universidad de Alicante (Spain), will be at the IEA on September 23, at 10:30 am, to take part in the seminar El Paradigma de la Modernidad y sus Impactos Socioambientales. He will address the organization of modern societies around the idea of “unlimited” growth. According to him, the model generates a steady accumulation of goods and materials, the consequence of which has been social exclusion and an environmental crisis. During the event, the "paradigm of modernity" will be exemplified by the debate that has taken place in Brazil with regard to dams.

Seminar approaches the dialogue between history and environment

The manner by which historians organize and analyze different approaches to the interlocution between history and the environment is the central axis of the seminar Environment and Historical Dimension: Approach Perspectives, which will take place on September 28, from 10 am to 6 pm at the IEA. Organized by the IEA's Environment and Society Research Group and by the Work Group on Environmental History (ANPUH/SP), the debate will be split in two themes: “Historical Knowledge and the Environment: Epistemological Considerations” and "Past and Present in the Environmental History: Relations and Problems".
