Applications to the Sabbatical Year Program at the IEA must be sent by November 6

November 6 is the deadline for candidates to submit their research projects for the Sabbatical Year Program at the IEA in 2016. Aimed at professors of the USP who wish to develop individual research at the IEA, the program was instituted by President Marco Antonio Zago in June this year. To apply for one of the six vacancies, the candidates need to have at least seven years of effective exercise of their functions in full devotion to teaching and research (RDIDP), and submit a CV and a research project to be developed.

IEA brings together experts to discuss the unemployment in Brazil

A major concern in Brazil today, unemployment will be the theme of a debate at the IEA and also of the next issue of the journal Estudos Avançados. Four guests - three of the journal's dossier authors - will discuss the subject, addressing the decrease in income, the increase in the number of people out of work in big cities, the economic adjustment policies, the integration of young people in the labor market and the intervention of the unions' movement. The seminar will have Marcio Pochman, from UNICAMP, as coordinator and will take place on October 16, at 9 am, in the IEA Events Room.

Helen Longino, an exponent of philosophy, will be at the IEA for two conferences

Helen Longino, considered one of the current exponents of philosophy of science, will speak at the IEA on October 22-23, at 9.30 am. Organized by the IEA's Philosophy, History, and Sociology of Science and Technology Research Group, the meetings will address science and values in different topics: Critical constructive empiricism: the social character of knowledge, focusing on the critical discursive aspect of objectivity and its consequences for understanding the role of values in the scienceson the 22nd andValues, heuristics, and politics: an exploration of the relation between social and methodological values in science on the 23rd.

Colloquium discusses “fabrication” in the context of contemporary technology

IEA's São Carlos Center will promote the Colloquium on Fabrication on October 14-15, at 6.30 pm, with organization by David Sperling, a professor at the USP's Institute of Architecture and Urbanism (IAU). The event marks the beginning of activities pertaining to "fabrication" at the Center, which will draw together research studies on the potentialities and challenges that arise from “fabrication” in today’s technological environment, permeated by processes that are increasingly mediated and controlled numerically. As part of the symposium, the exhibition Homo Faber: Digital Fabrication in Latin America will open on October 14 at the USP São Carlos Cultural Center.

Pro-vice-chancellor of Birmingham will talk about the role of informal young caregivers

Still a little discussed theme in Brazil, the work of young people and children as caregivers of older family members will be discussed at a conference at the IEA on October 21, at 9.30 am. The speaker will be Saul Becker, pro-vice-chancellor of the University of Birmingham. England already carries out studies in this field of knowledge as well as Australia, the United States and some sub-Saharan countries. According to the research being conducted, there is a diversity of social policies evolving to support these young people.

Meeting approaches the agricultural challenges due to climate changes

After discussing the water crisis and the Brazilian energy matrix, the cycle Towards COP21: The Groundwork to Paris – Climate Change, Adaptation, Solutions and Opportunities will devote the third meeting to the challenges of agriculture in face of climate changes. The debate will take place onOctober 14, at 9.30 am, and will focus on Climate Change and Food Security: Will We Be Able To Feed 10 Billion People? The exhibitor will be Marcelo Vieira, from the Brazilian Rural Society. The cycle is organized by the IEA's Environment and Society Research Group and by the USP's Support Center for Research on Climate Change (INCLINE).

Seminar presents causes, impacts and solutions to climate changes

The impacts of climate change in the state of São Paulo will be discussed by experts at the seminar Climate Change in São Paulo: Causes, Impacts and Solutions, to be held on October 14-16, daily from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, in the auditorium of the Brasiliana Guita e José Mindlin Library. The meeting, sponsored by the São Paulo State Academy of Science (ACIESP), by the USP's Institute of Biosciences (IB) and by the USP's Interdisciplinary Climate Investigation center (INCLINE), and supported by the IEA, will be divided into five thematic panels: Water, the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21), Biodiversity, Cities and Health, and Public Policies.
