Seminar debates new Brazilian Innovation Law

A new law in Brazil, established on January 12, will be discussed at the seminar "The New Law of Innovation: Expectations, Perspectives and Initiatives", on April 4, from 9.30 pm to 12.00 pm, in the Congregation Room of the USP's Faculty of Economics, Management and Accounting (FEA). The central exhibition will be given by deputy Sibá Machado, rapporteur of the project that gave rise to the law. The meeting will feature representatives from the scientific, business and legal communities as debaters.

IEA's São Carlos Center holds a debate on the consequences of the disaster in Mariana

IEA's São Carlos Center will bring together four panelists and a moderator to address the consequences of the environmental disaster in the Brazilian municipality of Mariana after the disruption of a tailings dam belonging to the mining company Samarco. The debate "The Doce River Valley: a Disaster in Progress" will take place on March 31, at 7.00 pm, on the USP's campus 1 in São Carlos. Marcelo Tramontano and Luciano Costa, both professors at the USP's Institute of Architecture and Urbanism (IAU), will discuss the experience of traveling through affected areas. Professors Reinaldo Duque Brasil, from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) and an expert in the Doce River Basin, and Eduardo Mario Mendiondo, a profe ssor at the USP's School of Engineering in São Carlos (EESC-USP) and general coordinator of the National Center for Monitoring and Natural Disaster Alerts of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (CEMADEN / MCTI) will also be conferencists. Moderation will be in charge of Marcel Fantin, a professor at the IAU.

Experts discuss alternatives to boost aquaculture

Experts will gather at the IEA for another Strategic Workshop of the USP's Dean for Research on March 30, at 8.30 am. The meeting will be held with support of the IEA and of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences (ACIESP). "Aquaculture: Challenges and Opportunities in the Brazilian Blue Revolution" will seek to trace the possible contributions of academia to boost this segment of food production, which is being considered an important way to feed the growing world population. In 2009 the projections of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) showed that aquaculture was already responsible for half the volume of fish consumed on the planet. The discussion will be broadcast live on the IEA's website.

INTERCONTINENTAL ACADEMIA

Second phase of the Intercontinental Academia has been completed

The first edition of the Intercontinental Academia (ICA) came to its end on March 18 at the Nagoya University's Institute for Advanced Research (IAR), in Japan. Almost a year after the meeting in São Paulo, organized by the IEA in April 2015, the thirteen young researchers of diverse academic background and different nationalities have completed their studies on the subject "time" and presented the content to a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), the expected outcome of the project.
