Humanists and the new communication patterns of the digital age

Michael A. Elliott, a professor of literature and culture of the United States at Emory University, will be at the IEA to discuss the implications of new technologies and communication patterns for the way how humanists convey their research to audiences that are external to the university. At the conference "The Humanities and its Publics", to be held on April 19, at 10.00 am, Elliott will address the American academics' view of their role in society since the beginning of the 20th century. The possibilities and risks of becoming a public intellectual in the digital age will also be under discussion. The conference will be broadcast live on the web.

IEA will hold a meeting with a specialist on advanced manufacturing

One of the major experts in advanced manufacturing in Brazil will be at the IEA on April 15, at 2:30 pm, to address the subject. At the seminar "Advanced Manufacturing", to be held in the Institute's Events Room, Jefferson Gomes, regional director of the Industry National Service (SENAI) of the State of Santa Catarina and a professor at the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (ITA), will talk about the advanced industry impacts on human resources, technological combination, supply chain development, and the necessary aspects of regulation and infrastructure for the segment. The advanced manufacturing, or industry 4.0, is related to what has been called the 4th Industrial Revolution, which aims at creating smart factories based on the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, cy ber-physical systems, among others.

Seminar discusses the impact of corruption on the Brazilian democracy

Deficits, challenges and proposals for the Brazilian democracy to face corruption will be addressed at the seminar "The Impact of Corruption on the Quality of Democracy", which will take place on April 19, from 10.00 am to 12.30 pm, in the former University Board Room. The event has been organized by the IEA's research group on Quality of Democracy and by the USP's Research Center for Public Policy (NUPPs), and will bring together panelists who will deepen the analysis of the implications of corruption for the Brazilian democracy by discussing aspects of transparency, accountability, popular participation, the quality of democratic institutions, and the role of law. The seminar will also mark the launch of the International Journal of Research on Corruption and Demo cracy (IJRCD) and of its first edition's call for papers. There will be live broadcast over the internet.

Sex tourism in Brazil and women trafficking will be discussed at the IEA

The documentary Cinderelas, Lobos e um Príncipe Encantado ("Cinderellas, Big Bad Wolves and a Prince"), by Joel Zito Araújo, will be the backdrop of the debate "Sex Tourism and the Search for the European Prince", which takes place on May 2, at 2.30 pm, in the IEA's Events Room, with live broadcast over the internet. Organized by the IEA's Intercultural Dialogues Research Group, the meeting will have a session for the show of the film before a discussion between Araújo and research group members. In 2008 the director traveled to the Northeastern states of Brazil and countries in Europe (Italy and Germany) to portray sex tourism in Brazil and women trafficking. According to the organizers of the debate, about 900 tho usand pe ople a year are trafficked across international borders exclusively for sexual exploitation.

Innovation now counts with a comprehensive and consensual law

Due to a constitutional amendment that has led to a new innovation law enacted on January 11 by President Dilma Rousseff, innovation now has a new legal framework, a result of consensus among the academic community, Brazilian congress, industry and government. The legal changes and the topics to be regulated were discussed at the seminar "The New Innovation Law: Expectations, Perspectives and Initiatives", on April 4. The exhibitors were deputy Sibá Machado, rapporteur of the project that gave rise to the innovation law; Helena Nader, president of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC); Paul Mól, from the National Industry Confederation (CNI); and Maria Paula Dallari Bucci, legal superintendent at the Uni versity of São Paulo.
