REPORT

IEA launches a program to bring together proposals for the improvement of life quality in large cities

Research and activities at USP that study proposals aimed at quality of life in metropolitan areas will be gathered and consolidated by the USP Global Cities Program, launched by the IEA-USP in July. The idea, according to coordinator Marcos Buckeridge, is to systematize and deepen research that are already carried out at the University in various areas, and to deliver proposals to policymakers. Initially focused on São Paulo, the project's ultimate goal is to lead the city to the top of the global cities ranking, formulated by A.T. Kearney management consulting.

The fusion of different kinds of knowledge towards a more humane science

Chronobiologist Till Roenneberg visited the IEA-USP in July for the conference "Why Science Needs More than Interdisciplinarity". Professor and vice-president of the Institute of Medical Psychology at Ludwig-Maximilians University (LMU), he argued that the natural sciences and the humanities must be closer to each other and in harmony. For him, the humanities should resume the role of criticizing science. "But not in the way as it is currently happening. They have to be more communicative and more critical in relation to other areas," he said.

The Social Geography of Zika in Brazil

Seen as a threat to global health, the Zika virus can be an indicator of the inequality that persists in Brazil, since its impact is greater in poorer areas. The topic has been discussed in the article "The Social Geography of Zika in Brazil", by Jeffrey Lesser, a professor at Emory University and visiting professor at the IEA-USP, where he conducts research on a project entitled "Metropolis, Migration and Mosquitoes: Historicizing Health Outcomes in São Paulo, Brazil". The article has been published in the 48th issue of the NACLA Report on the Americas and examines approaches to public health in Brazil, population attitudes and socioeconomic conditions of the analyzed areas.

AGENDA

A debate about the environmental services market, its actors and legislation

"Roundtable on Ecosystem Services and Communities" will bring together experts to raise questions about the Brazilian experiences of payment for ecosystem services and to discuss the role of local and traditional communities, and the lack of a legal and institutional framework that supports the implementation of this mechanism in Brazil. The meeting will take place in the IEA-USP Events Room on August 3, at 9 am. There will be live broadcast over the web.

German engineers Eike Permin and Philipp von Cube, from the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT), will be at the IEA-USP on August 12, at 9 am, to present their studies on Industry 4.0 or Advanced Manufacturing. At the conference "Industry 4.0: Digitalization in Manufacturing, Smart Devices and Data Mining on the Shop Floor" they will analyze this market and demonstrate successful applications of the concept, as well as trends and the economic potential behind it.
