Fernando Haddad and Luiza Erundina present their experiences as mayors of São Paulo at the IEA

The USP Global Cities Program will initiate a cycle of talks with all the mayors of São Paulo on November 11. The series 'Management of a Metropolis: the Experience of Mayors in São Paulo' will have the current mayor Fernando Haddad as first guest. From 9.30 am, at the IEA Events Room, he will present what he believes to be the main challenges for the city administration. On November 18, the guest will be congresswoman Luiza Erundina, mayor of São Paulo from 1989 to 1993. She will talk on her experience at the municipal management from 2.30 pm, also in the IEA Events Room.

Women and sexual violence, a humanitarian disaster in perspective

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (November 25), the IEA will host the seminar 'Sexual Violence against Women in Conflict Times' in partnership with 'USP Mulheres' (USP Women) and Remember the Women Institute (RWI). With a conference by Rochelle G. Saidel, founder and executive director of the RWI, and Beatriz de Barros Souza, MSc student in Human Rights at USP's Faculty of Law, the meeting will take place from 10.00 am to 12.00 pm in the IEA Events Room, and will be broadcast live over the internet. The theme will be analyzed from two aspects: sexual violence during the Holocaust and the contemporary sexual violence in Somalia, a phenomenon characterized by the United Nations as "the wor st conte mporary humanitarian disaster."

Seminar presents vision of the armed forces on the defense in Brazil

The government-sponsored defense in Brazil will be the theme of the meeting to be held on November 29, from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, in the IEA Events Room, as the inaugural activity of the IEA's Strategic Dialogues Cycle. There will be exhibitions of representatives of the Army, Navy, Air Force and the national defense industry. This first dialogue aims to provide the academic community with up to date and realistic information that enable debates and conclusions on the situation, and prospects of Brazil in this field, as well as the roles of stakeholders in society. The meeting will be broadcast live by the IEA website.

IEA: 30 years in line with science, culture and society

The IEA celebrated the 30th anniversary of its creation, which occurred in the first year of Brazil's return to democracy and during the tenure of José Goldemberg as USP's President, on October 29. In these 30 years, there have been innumerable subjects discussed through programmes, projects, research groups, study groups, professors and researchers, consolidating the Institute as a space for reflection, where it is possible to perform advanced studies conducted by experts in their fields of knowledge. The research activities are complemented by the journal Estudos Avançados, launched in 1987 and one of the most read on the basis of SciELO.

Video presents the research of Paulo Saldiva on air pollution

The work on the effects of air pollution on human health that has been carried out for years by the director of the IEA, Paulo Saldiva, has been presented in a video by FAPESP. Saldiva remembers that "air pollution can not be solved with medication or health campaigns." It involves urban planning, issues related to mobility, studies on land use and occupation. According to the researcher, while cigarette smoking is seen as a public health issue, air pollution still is not, even though about 14,000 people die early because of it only the city of São Paulo every year.

New center for advanced studies in Costa Rica has deputy director of the IEA in its board

Professor Guilherme Ary Plonski, deputy director of the IEA-USP, took office as a member of the of the 'Espacio Universitario de Estudios Avanzados' at the University of Costa Rica on September 5. On his first participation in the new institution of interdisciplinary research, he gave the lecture 'Advanced studies: an international perspective', in which he showed a bit of the 30-year history of the IEA and the context for the creation of the network University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS). To Plonski, the UBIAS network has a large concentration of institutes in Europe, is gaining visibility in Asia and showing some growth in Africa. "I realize that we are institutionally responsible for stimulating this model in which we believe, in order to reproduce it w ith its own characteristics in Latin America," he says.
