AGENDA

Researcher shows the power of games and virtuality in science and museums

Current research on "Knowledge Architectures," the core area of the Excellence Cluster Image Knowledge Gestaltung, will be presented by Christian Stein, founder of gamelab.berlin. The idea is to show projects that use virtuality, virtual reality and games as a cultural technique. According to the conferencist, science and research need to communicate with a new audience, so museums, exhibitions and open science labs are proving to be promising playgrounds to try new ways of communicating and translating into new media. The conference "Architectures of Knowledge: About Interdisciplinary Research on Games, Virtuality and the Global Museum" will be at the IEA on February 2, at 2.30 pm. The event has been organized by IEA's Research Group Fórum Permane nte: Cultural System Between Public and Private and will be broadcast live on the Institute's website.

Roger Buergel proposes unclassified museums in a conference at the IEA

Roger Buergel, director of the Johann Jacobs Museum in Zurich and curator of the 12th Documenta in Kassel, will be at the IEA for the conference "The Museum of Things in-Between". On February 9, at 2.30 pm, he will address the need to give more visibility and space to things that are now in an in-between condition in the field of culture. In Buergel's opinion, one must get rid of the museological categories, and of the distinctions between art and non-art, promoting the appreciation of the uniqueness of objects on display. The speech will be broadcast live on the IEA's website. The activity is organized by the Research Group Fórum Permanente: Cultural System Between Publ ic and Private.

RESEARCH

Luiz Bevilacqua is IEA's new visiting professor

Engineer Luiz Bevilacqua, professor emeritus from the Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute of Engineering Graduation and Research of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (COPPE), is the new visiting professor of the IEA. The project that will be carried out at the Institute is based on the use of applied mathematical-computational models, "increasingly important for the simulation of certain phenomena coming mainly from the biological, socioeconomic and ecological areas, which shows their importance for interdisciplinary convergence". Theoretical research and seminars linked to the project will result in scientific papers and a book to be published by the IEA.

INTERNATIONAL

UBIAS chooses 'Fear' as common theme for the member institutes in 2017

The international network UBIAS (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study) has chosen "Fear" as Topic of the Year for 2017. The institutes of advanced studies that are members of the network will hold events to discuss the political, sociological, psychosocial, neurological, biological and cultural aspects of fear. This is the second time that UBIAS comes up with an annual common work topic. In 2016, the theme was "Media and Data Control." The goal of adopting an annual theme of global importance is to stimulate the production of new ideas and to strengthen communication between the institutes. It is expected that each institute will hold events on their own or in partnership with other institutes.
