Rouanet talks about Machado de Assis as he bids farewell to the Olavo Setubal Chair

A roundtable on Machado de Assis will mark the end of Sérgio Paulo Rouanet’s tenure as the first holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture and Science. The political scientist, philosopher and diplomat will coordinate and take part in the activity, accompanied by other specialists, on March 16, at 2:30 pm, in the Old Room of USP’s University Council. The work and life of the writer will be analyzed from two perspectives: the Shandian form, a concept developed by Rouanet in 2007, and Machado de Assis’ correspondence compiled in five volumes organized by Rouanet. The conference will be broadcast live on the IEA's website.

Ricardo Ohtake takes on the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture and Science

Architect Ricardo Ohtake will take on the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture and Science one day after the end of Sérgio Paulo Rouanet’s tenure. The event will be held on March 17, at 10:00 am, in the room of the University Council. Created in February 2016, the chair is the result of an agreement between the IEA and Itaú Cultural, which funds the initiative. The choice of Ohtake was decided by the chair’s Governance Committee, composed of three representatives from each partner, in addition to the current occupant, Rouanet in this case. There will be a live broadcast on the IEA website.

Meeting discusses challenges of the modern State and the role of large corporations in politics

The power of influence of private corporations on the democratic process and the corruption resulting from corporate financing of political campaigns will be the subject of the last meeting of the Global Megatrends and Challenges to Democracy Laboratory. Coordinated by Álvaro de Vasconcelos, from the University of Coimbra and the Institute of International Relations (IRI), and by Renato Janine Ribeiro, coordinator of The Future Beckons research group, the seminar “Corruption in Politics and the Demand for Alternatives” will be held on March 9, at 2:00 pm, in the IEA’s Events Room. Speakers will be Helcimara de Souza Telles, from Minas Gerais Federal University (UFMG), and Marco Antonio Carvalho Teixeira, from Getúlio Vargas Foundation. The confere nce will be broadcast live on the IEA's website.

Researcher addresses innovation in biotechnology at the service of human health

Researcher and consultant Denise Golgher, an expert on innovative technologies for human health, will be at the IEA to offer an overview of the biotech industry. At the seminar “Innovation for Human Health: The Biotechnology Industry”, on March 10, at 10:00 am, in the IEA’s Events Room, she will talk about this sector in Brazil and how it began and grew in the United States, highlighting the factors that helped make that country leader in the field. Golgher will also explain how the development of biotechnologies contributes to improve people’s health and to create new businesses and better economic conditions in a country. The activity will be broadcast live over the web .

Meeting discusses how to promote an entrepreneurial profile at the university

Senén Barro Ameneiro, head of RedEmprendia and former president of the University of Santiago de Compostela, will be the lecturer at the seminar “¿Son emprendedores nuestros jóvenes universitarios? ¿Les enseñamos a serlo?,” to be held on March 15, from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm, in the IEA’s Events Room. In his talk, in Spanish and without simultaneous translation, he will present the results of research carried out in 2016 to discover the intention, the profile and the entrepreneurial attitude of Latin American university students. He will also provide highlights from the first study of the entrepreneurial profile of Spanish and Mexican university students. The speech will be in spanish and broadcast live on the IEA's website.
