AGENDA

Seminar discusses the risks of Trump's economic policy for Brazil and Latin America

Economist Gilson Schwartz, a member of the IEA 2017 Sabbatical Year Program, organizes the seminar 'New Frontiers of Economic Geopolitics: Trump, Brazil and Latin America'. A group of speakers will discuss foreign policy and the profile of the new president of the United States of America on March 28, at 2.00 pm, in the IEA Events Room. A series of questions will be the starting point for the discussion: How will national and multilateral financial markets and institutions react to the new political scenario that heads to unilateralism? What does the new populism mean on a global scale? What is the risk of Donald Trump's neoconservative agenda interrupting or perverting public policies in Latin America aimed at sustainable development with innovation and democratizat ion of opportunities? The event will be broadcast live through the Institute's website.

Researchers present studies using geography to assess social inequalities

Researchers of the University of Birmingham will present two studies of their research on sustainable cities at the IEA. On March 29, at 10.00 am, Peter Kraftl, who conducts studies on the geography of children, will lead the panel '(Re)Connect the Nexus: Young Brazilians' Experiences of and Learning about Food, Water and Energy', at which he will show the results of research on how these three items are intertwined in people's lives and work. In the second panel, entitled 'New Urbanisms in India: Urban Living, Sustainability and Everyday Life,' Sophie Hadfield-Hill, Professor of Human Geography, will speak on two projects that evaluate whether initiatives to make Indian cities smart will also enable sustainable urban transformation. The debate will be in English and broadcast live.

RESEARCH

Participants of the first year of the IEA Sabbatical Program analyze their activities

From March 2016 to February this year, the first group of professors selected to participate in the IEA Sabbatical Year Program focused on their research and integrated them into the Institute's activities. In 12 months, they have produced articles, book chapters, music and communications at international meetings in their areas. Some of the projects have not yet been completed, but are in an advanced stage of production. For instance, Rodolfo Nogueira Coelho de Souza, from the Department of Music of the Ribeirão Preto Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences, and Languages and Literature (FFLCRP-USP), wrote the libretto of an opera and composed part of the music. The IEA has interviewed all the six researchers and listended to their comments on the carried out activities.

REPORT

Women representation in the artistic system needs to be better evaluated

The history of art in Brazil could not be written without the fundamental references of great female artists, such as Tarsila do Amaral, Anita Malfatti, Lygia Clark, Tomie Ohtake and many others. They have guaranteed space not only in culture, but many of their works are listed among the most expensive in international auctions. The comfortable situation of artists in Brazil, however, must be carefully considered, since the apparent advantage may be tied to a historical perspective that does not necessarily reflect the current situation of this field in relation to the contemporary artists. The observation has been made by professor and researcher Ana Paula Cavalcanti Simioni, from USP's Institute of Brazilian Studies (IEB), during the debate Art and Gender, held on March 8 at the IEA, in a partn ership between IEB, IEA, and USP's Museum of Contemporary Art (MAC-USP).
