Culture

The impact of digital culture on public policies in Portugal and the EU

Sociologist Helena dos Santos, a researcher at the Center for Research in Communication, Information and Digital Culture (CIC Digital) of Portugal, will be at the IEA on September 4, at 2.00 pm, for the conference 'Cultures, Policies and the Digital Context: Questions from Portugal.' Santos will address the state of the art of digital culture in Portugal, focusing her speech on the implications that this increasingly universalized process of relationship with the technological-informational-communicational system presents in the domain of public policies for culture in Portugal and the European Union. The meeting is organized by José Teixeira Coelho Netto, coordinator of IEA's Research Group on Computational Humanities.

Directors of MASP and Itaú Cultural discuss the role of cultural institutions in the formation of São Paulo

The president of MASP, Heitor Martins, and the director of Itaú Cultural, Eduardo Saron, will be the next cultural managers to talk about the role of cultural institutions in the formation and development of São Paulo. The meeting 'Cultural Institutions II' will take place on September 19, at 7 pm, in the Multipurpose Room of Itaú Cultural, and will be part of the 'Culture, Institutionality and Management' cycle. As in the first activity, this will also be moderated by Ricardo Ohtake, director of Instituto Tomie Ohtake and holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair on Art, Culture and Science, which promotes the cycle.

Seminar examines Chinese and Brazilian macrometropolises

The extraordinary growth of Chinese megacities, and the characteristics of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, as Brazilian megacities present in the list of 32 urban agglomerations of the planet with more than 10 million inhabitants in 2010, will be addressed by French and Brazilian researchers at the meeting 'High Density Macrometropoles: São Paulo and Shanghai', on September 12 at 2.30 pm, in the IEA Events Room. The seminar is organized by IEA's Research Group Public Policies, Territorialities and Societies, and USP's School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH).

Engineering

The future of engineering education in Brazil, impacted by technological evolution

On September 14, at 9:30 am, Paul Gilbert, CEO of the Quanser multinational of teaching materials, will hold a conference on the future of engineering education in Brazil, which is going through a transition phase caused by technological evolution. At the event 'The New Order in Engineering Education: Challenges and Perspectives,' which takes place at the Auditorium of Mechanical Engineering of USP's Polytechnic School (POLI), Gilbert will be accompanied by debaters Luiz Bevilacqua, a visiting professor at the IEA, and Mario Salerno, a professor at POLI and coordinator of the Observatory of Innovation and Competitiveness, based at the IEA. The conference will be moderated by José Roberto Cardoso, also from POLI.

Cozman deals with success and perspectives of machine learning

Two phenomena have been essential for the development of artificial intelligence over the past 15 years: the increasing computational capacity and sensor technology, and the increasing availability of large masses of data, allowing fine-tuning of complex models. The seminar 'The Inevitable Victory of Artificial Intelligence: Success and Promise of Machine Learning', on September 22, at 10.00 am, at the IEA, will analyze the theme and suggest some points that deserve technological and social attention in the future. The exhibition will be by Fabio Gagliardi Cozman, from the Department of Mechatronics at USP's Polytechnic School (POLI).

Science

Symposium on the History of Science receives proposals for sessions until September 28

USP's Symposium on the History of Science and Technology: Building Interdisciplinary Dialogues will receive proposals for professors, researchers and post-graduate students (from USP, Instituto Butantan, IPEN and IPT) until September 28 to hold oral communication sessions. The symposium, which will take placeon November 13 and 14, is organized by USP's Intercultural Center for the History of Science and by the IEA's Khronos Research Group on History of Science, Epistemology and Medicine.

Extension course offers classes on psychosocial factors in the lives of refugees and immigrants

'Mental Health, Immigration and Interculturality' is the extension course that UNIFESP will carry out from September 23 to December 2 at the Vila Clementino campus in São Paulo, with the support from the IEA. The aim is to introduce professionals working with immigration to the knowledge of an intercultural approach. 30 students will be selected. Those interested in participating in the selection should send a resume and letter of intent until September 15. The organizer of the course is psychologist Sylvia Dantas, a professor at UNIFESP and coordinator of IEA's Intercultural Dialogues Research Group.
