Society

Power, social insertion and politics of women will be theme of seminar

Gender relations will be a topic at the seminar 'Gender Relations, Collective Health and Power', which will address "how power relations interfere in the social and political integration of women, and how they overcome the different ways of maintaining the inequalities of daily life." Organized by IEA's Research Group Public Policies, Territorialities and Society, the meeting will take place in the IEA Events Room on October 19 at 2.00 pm, with live broadcast.

Literature

Silviano Santiago speaks of 'Machado' and the impasses of contemporary literature

One of the most important Brazilian writers and intellectuals today, Silviano Santiago will discuss his latest novel, 'Machado' (Companhia das Letras), and the impasses of contemporary literature at the IEA. The meeting 'Machado de Assis - Approaches' will take place on October 24, at 9.30 am, with a live webcast. The organizer is Daria Jaremtchuk, a professor of History of Arts at USP's School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (EACH), and of USP's School of Communications and Arts graduation program. She joined the first edition of the IEA Sabbatical Year Program in 2016.

Experiences by Aracy Amaral and Justo Werlang will be presented at the Pinacoteca

The Pinacoteca will host the fifth event on cultural leaders, which is part of the cycle 'Culture, Institutionality and Management' of the Olavo Setubal Chair on Art, Culture and Science, on October 20, at 2.30 pm. At this meeting, the guests will be Justo Werlang, manager of the Iberê Camargo Foundation, and Paulo Portella Filho, artist and museologist who will talk about Aracy Amaral, former director of the Pinacoteca and MAC-USP. The event will be broadcast live over the web. On the 24th, at 2.30 pm, a new phase of the cycle begins, with the first conference on exhibitions that marked the Brazilian cultural scenario. Critic and curator Agnaldo Farias will s peak of Biennials and the exhibition 'From Figurativism to Abstractionism', held in 1949 at the MAM-SP, curated by Leon Deagand. This meeting will be at the IEA, with live broadcast.

Cycle on conservation and restoration of cultural assets brings together professionals from the area

The first meeting of a cycle on the restoration and conservation of cultural assets will take place on October 26, at 10.00 am, at the IEA. 'The Work of a Conservator-Restorer: Museum Conservator and Atelier Conservator' will foster interaction among museologists, conservators, restorers, curators, and conservation scientists. The debate will be transmitted live over the internet, with the possibility for the audience of sending comments and questions to the members of the roundtable. The organization is in charge of IEA's Research Group Fórum Permanente: Cultural System Between Public and Private, with support of the Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library, the Schoo l of Communications and Arts (ECA) and the Museu Paulista (MP), all from USP, and of the Department of Museology, Conservation and Restoration of the Federal University of Pelotas.

Memorial of Resistance hosts exhibition of eight artists on the memory of Latin American dictatorships

An exhibition at the Memorial of Resistance in São Paulo will bring together eight artists in a collection that aims to contribute to the reflection on the memory of Latin American dictatorships, in especially Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The exhibition 'Hiatus: The Memory of Dictatorial Violence in Latin America' will be shown from October 21 to March 12, 2018, and has been organized by IEA's Research Group Human Rights, Democracy, Politics and Memory, in partnership with the Pinacoteca Association of Art and Culture, and the Memorial of Resistance in São Paulo. The Goethe Institute and USP's Dean of Culture and University Extension are supporting the initiative. The opening on the 21st will take place at 11.00 am. Afterwards, at 2.00 pm, there wil l be the 'Resisting Saturday - The art of memory: thinking of the Latin American dictatorships today.'

Meeting discusses art inspired by the violence of the military dictatorship

The conference 'Art as Memory of Evil and Space of Action' will bring together artists and researchers to discuss the relationship between art and violence, and how to present "pain without slipping into the enjoyment of suffering." The participants will discuss the reach of this critical and mnemonic art, and how artists can become agents of the struggle for memory and truth. The meeting will take place at the IEA Events Room on October 23, starting at 10.00 am with a live broadcast. The activity is an unfolding of the exhibition 'Hiatus: The Memory of Dictatorial Violence in Latin America.'
