IEA to host the first UBIAS Directors' Conference held in the American continent

From March 19 to 23, the IEA will host the fifth biennial conference of directors of advanced study institutes of the UBIAS international network (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study). This is the first time the event will be held on the American continent. Following one of the objectives of the network, the participants will think about new forms of collaboration between the institutes and their researchers, be it in programs or collaborative platforms. They will also choose the topic for the year 2019, a common theme of global importance to be explored in different activities and formats by researchers linked to IASs.

Eliana Sousa Silva, director of the Tide Development Network, is the new holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Arts, Culture and Science

Educator and social activist Eliana Sousa Silva is the new holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Arts, Culture and Science, replacing designer Ricardo Ohtake, who held the position in 2017. The Chair is the result of an IEA partnership with Itaú Cultural. Founding Director of the Tide Development Network, an important organization that works with the community in the Maré slums in Rio de Janeiro, Silva will take office on March 27, in a ceremony at USP. She is the first woman on the position, with the mission to bring the discussion about culture in the expanded field to the university, as well as her role as an agent of mediation and social transformation.

Seminar highlights the importance of innovative experiences in basic education

In spite of the numerous difficulties of Brazilian basic education, there are several public and private schools of good quality. To address these examples, the Brazilian Public Basic Education Study Group will hold the seminar 'Schools and Experiences: What Can Be Admired Despite Everything?' on March 12, from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, at the IEA, with a live webcast. The main objective of the seminar is to learn about the innovative experiences, the challenges they face, and to discuss the transformations necessary for them to cease being a minority in Brazilian public education.

Workshop uses art to create aesthetic pedagogy in human rights education

A cycle of meetings will use art to work on human rights education. Organized by IEA's Human Rights, Democracy, Policy and Memory Research Group, the workshop 'Population in Street Situation and Human Rights' will take place on March 15, at 10.15 am, in the Alfredo Bosi Room at the IEA. It will be the first of the cycle 'Art, Short Film and Human Rights,' which will seek to develop an aesthetic pedagogy of human rights education, working the participants' sensitivity in looking at the issue.

Experts discuss how to harness Brazil's potential in strategic natural resources

The seminar 'Dialogue on Technological Cooperation - Transforming Resources into Riches' will address the country's potential in natural resources considered strategic and the possible ways to make them a new driving force for sustainable development on March 16, at 9.00 am, at the IEA. The conferencists will be Caetano Juliani, a professor at USP's Department of Sedimentary and Environmental Geology (GSA), Fernando Landgraf, director of the Institute of Technological Research (IPT), and Eduardo Ribeiro, president of the Brazilian Metallurgy and Mining Company (CBMM). The event will be broadcast live.
