Seminar discusses the characteristics of the Anthropocene

Geochemist Sonia Maria Barros de Oliveira, a professor at USP's Institute of Astronomy, Geophysics and Atmospheric Sciences, and journalist Reinaldo José Lopes, from the newspaper 'Folha de S. Paulo,' will be the speakers at the seminar 'A Talk about the Anthropocene,' on April 24, at 2.00 pm, at the IEA. According to the coordinator of the seminar, economist José Eli da Veiga, from USP's Institute of Energy and Environment, the term 'Anthropocene' - coined by Dutch scientist Paul J. Crutzen - is used to designate the current era, marked by strong human participation as an environmental force capable of climate change on the planet. This phase is preceded by the Holocene, begun more than 11,000 years ago, when the civilization proces s started. The event will be broadcast live over the internet.

Mollier analyzes relations between press and power in France since the Dreyfus Affair

The relations between the press, and the political and financial power in France since the end of the 19th century will be discussed by historian Jean-Yves Mollier, from the University of Versailles Saint-Quentin-en Yvelines, at the conference 'Press and Power: From the Dreyfus Affair to the Media Conglomerates,' on April 25, at 9.30 am, at the IEA. According to the organizer of the event, Marisa Midori, a professor at USP's School of Communications and Arts, and former participant in IEA's Sabbatical Year Program, a debate about the power of the press, which rescues emblematic cases, becomes very timely in times of social networks and fake news. The event will be broadcast live over the internet.

Two events start public programme of a study group on Marx's work

The seminar 'Marx, Science and Technology,' to be held on April 12, at 2.00 pm, will give start to the public programme of a study group created to discuss Karl Marx's work, especially in aspects related to science and technology. Professors Orlando Lima Pimentel and Marcos Barbosa de Oliveira, and PhD student João Bourbaki, all linked to USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH), will be the exhibitors. On May 3, at 2.00 pm, the group will hold their second event, namely a conference given by Jorge Luís da Silva Grespan (also from FFLCH) on 'The Structure and Meaning of Volume III of Karl Marx's 'Das Kapital''. The new study group is an initiative of IEA's Researc h Group Philosophy, History, and Sociology of Science and Technology. Both events will be broadcast liveover the internet.

Conference cycle addresses the need for multi-strategic research

The characteristics and possibilities of multi-strategic research are being analyzed in a cycle of conferences on the 'Need for Multi-Strategic Research.' On April 10, Professor Pablo Mariconda talked about 'Commercially-oriented Technoscience and the Need for Multi-Strategic Research.' The other two conferences will be given by Professor Hugh Lacey. On April 19, at 2.00 pm, the theme will be 'The Dialogue between Multi-Strategic Research and Traditional Knowledge.' On May 10, at 2.00 pm, he will speak on 'Democracy and Multi-Strategic Research.' Proposed by Lacey, multi-strategic research presupposes an alternative approach to what he calls commercially-oriented technoscience, characterized by the priority to the production of technological innovations geared to economic growth and its values. The conference will be broadcast liveonline.

Group launches a primer on urban agriculture

The implementation and management of safe, successful and sustainable urban gardens now have the help of the booklet 'Urban Agriculture - Guide to Good Practices,' which will be launched by IEA's Study Group on Urban Agriculture (GEAU) on April 27, at 12.00 pm, at USP's School of Medicine. The publication has been written by environmental engineer Luís Fernando Amato-Lourenço and coordinated by Professor Thais Mauad. They have used information from scientific articles, reviews on the subject and consultations with specialists. They point out that cities can be great places for growing food, but "some places may not be appropriate due to contamination of soil, water and / or air."

Human Rights

Situation of immigrants in Brazil is the theme of a meeting that seeks to create aesthetic pedagogy in human rights education

The second workshop of the cycle 'Art, Short Film and Human Rights,' which proposes to use art to work on human rights education, will seek to deepen knowledge about migrants in Brazil and in the world. With the same methodology used in the first meeting, it will present the short film '100% Boliviano, Mano,' in addition to data and statistics on the subject. Organized by IEA's research group on Human Rights, Democracy, Politics and Memory, the workshop will be held on April 26, at 9.00 am, with a livewebcast.
