AGENDA

Geographer addresses sharing, technological aspects and management of water resources

The difficulty of access to water may be related not only to the level of its availability but also to the quality of its management, according to geographer Luís Antonio Bittar Venturi. On August 3, at 11.00 am, he will be the main speaker at the conference 'Water Resources: From the Near East to Brazil,' organized by IEA's Research Group Khronos: History of Science, Epistemology and Medicine. Starting from three case studies, Venturi will seek to demonstrate that cooperative agreements for the shared use of river basins and the current stage of technological development "cancel out the hypothesis of water shortages and possible conflicts arising from water disputes." To address the issue, he will use the context of the Euphrates river basin, shared by Turkey, Syria and Iraq, as an empirical basis. A live webcast will be available on IEA's website.

Researchers discuss strategies to prevent viral emergencies in Brazil

The Strategic Workshop 'Prospective Virology: Strategies for Responding to Health Emergencies' will bring together researchers and health professionals to discuss "proactive and integrated" actions that help preventing viral emergencies in Brazil on August 7, from 9.00 am to 5.30 pm, at the IEA. According to the organizers, recent cases of Zika, Chikungunya and yellow fever, and the current threat of a new outbreak of measles and poliomyelitis indicate that academic and public health institutions perform pulverized actions which respond to such emergencies responsibly. "There are no mechanisms that can anticipate these scenarios, mitigating economic and public health impacts." The coordinators of the event will be Paolo Zanotto, from USP's Institu te of Biomedical Sciences (ICB,) Renato Pereira de Souza, from the Adolfo Lutz Institute, and Camila Malta, from the São Paulo Institute of Tropical Medicine (IMTSP). The activity will have a live webcast through IEA's website.
