Seminar discusses the variables in the formulation of public policies related to climate change

The seminar "From Global to Local: Public Policies and Climate Change in the Current Conjuncture," which will take place on May 6, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, at the IEA, will seek to identify, characterize, and discuss public policies that aim to minimize the effects of climate change. Researchers will analyze the interactions between the different actors, sectors, and institutions involved in the theme, and how each tries to make their interests prevail. They will also take the position adopted by President Jair Bolsonaro's government on the subject into account. The meeting has been organized by IEA's Research Group on Public Policies, Territorialities, and Society with the support of the Institut des Amériques.

Science and Culture

Transdisciplinarity 60 years after C. P. Snow's "The Two Cultures"

2019 marks the 60th anniversary of "The Two Cultures and the Scientific Revolution," a lecture delivered by British molecular physicist and novelist Charles Percy Snow (1905-1980) at the University of Cambridge. At the IEA, three researchers will gather to reflect on transdisciplinarity and the links between sciences and humanities that it can promote. "Sciences and Humanities Sixty Years Later" will be held on May 7, at 3:00 pm, under the coordination of José Eli da Veiga, a senior lecturer at USP's Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE). The presenters will be Ricardo Abramovay, also a senior lecturer at the IEE, and Sonia Maria Barros de Oliveira, a professor at USP's Institute of Geosciences (IGc).

Study presents data on deindustrialization and its consequences in Brazil

Unpublished data series of surveys that measured the participation of the manufacturing sectors in the Brazilian GDP from 1970 to 2016 will be presented at the seminar "Brazilian Industry on the Threshold of the 21st Century: Structural, Commercial, and Technological Evolution," on May 10, at 10:00 am, at the IEA. Based on data of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the study reveals that Brazil's deindustrialization is regular (and expected) for the labor-intensive manufacturing sectors, but premature (and undesirable) for the knowledge-intensive sectors. Therefore, it has negative consequences for the future scientific and technological development of the country. The meeting has been organized by IEA's Observatory of Innovation and Competitiveness.

Culture

Socioenvironmental ethics is the theme of a seminar of the cycle UrbanSus: Urban Sustainability

The next seminar of the cycle "UrbanSus: Urban Sustainability," to be held on May 23, at 8:30 am, will be dedicated to socioenvironmental ethics. The purpose of the meeting is to contribute to a greater understanding and dissemination of sustainability as a topic of interest between academia, society, and the public sector. It should be a stimulus to the construction of a culture of sustainability allied to socioenvironmental ethics. Some of the issues to be addressed by the presentations and debates are ethics in science and technology, environmental justice, equity, and sustainability. The organizers of the cycle are the USP Global Cities Program, hosted at the IEA, the School of Public Health (FSP-USP), and the Interdisciplinary Climate Investigation Center (INCLINE-USP).

The meeting will also feature presentations by three USP researchers: Tiago Falótico (School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities), Mercedes Okumura (Institute of Biosciences), and Astolfo Araujo (Museum of Archeology and Ethnology). Ethologist Eduardo Ottoni, a participant in IEA's Sabbatical Year Program, will be the coordinator.
