RESEARCH

New scientific field analyzes cultural transmission from an evolutionary point of view

Cultural evolution is the theme of the project being developed by ethologist Eduardo Ottoni, from USP's Institute of Psychology (IP), as a participant in the 2019 edition of the Institute's Sabbatical Year Program. In an interview, he has detailed the origins, development, and implications of this new discipline. Ottoni is writing a textbook on the field and articles for specialized periodicals, as well as organizing an international workshop. With these activities at the IEA, he hopes to foster debates on the recent study perspectives, which include Darwinian approaches to cultural evolution, gene-culture coevolution, extended cognition, and behavioral traditions in nonhuman animals.

USP undergraduates experience field research by conducting a community census

Since January, scholarship holders linked to the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science have been participating in a census that is collecting data from communities near the USP campuses of the city of São Paulo, namely Jardim São Remo, Jardim Keralux, and Vila Guaraciaba. The participants are undergraduates at several courses, who carry out field research, and graduate students, who supervise and support the work. There is also the mobilization of articulators, who are residents of the communities and collaborate in publicizing the project and in facilitating the contact between researchers and interviewees. The conclusion of the household survey is scheduled to take place in December, while the release of the results is planned for February 2020. The mapping of commercial enterprises and community institutions should not end before April of the same year.

"Life in the Cognitive Era" will be addressed by Donald Peterson, a visiting professor at the IEA

British cognitive scientist Donald Peterson is the new visiting professor at the IEA. For an initial period of one year, he will develop the research project "Life in the Cognitive Era." Until last year, he was a full professor of Computer Science at Shantou University in China. Peterson covers logic, philosophy, psychology, and computer science. During his stay, he will conduct seminar-series and prepare publications in the area of the project. In research, Peterson will focus on his concept of "epiduction" (a form of practical reason), and its relation with modern data conditions, the human brain, machine augmentation, and welfare.

Costin has been appointed by USP's President Vahan Agopyan for a one-year term, which is renewable for an additional year, as a representative of civil society, formerly occupied by chemist Denise Alves Fungaro.
