Artists, engineers, and psychoanalysts discuss interdisciplinarity, AI, and genetic interventions in art

Alba, a fluorescent rabbit created by contemporary artist Eduardo Kac, will be addressed as starting point for a discussion about artificial intelligence, the origins of light color, and ethics in the universe of art and BioArt. On August 29, from 2:00 pm, the meeting “The GFP Bunny and I: Art, Science, and Technology,” which integrates the series “The Relationship Between the Knowledge of Art and Science: Gender, Neocolonialism and Sidereal Space,” will bring together artists, engineers, and a physicist to discuss the topic. On August 30, also from 2:00 pm, another event will relate art, music, and physics. Organized by the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science, the series will have fortnightly activities until December. Four meetings have already been held in August. Two of them addressed the Brazilian and global challenges for the future, while the others focused on the relationship bet ween science and the works of Leonardo da Vinci and Brazilian plastic artist Cildo Meireles.

Researchers and public officials will meet to discuss organized crime and corruption in Brazil

The characteristics of organized crime and corruption in Brazil will be the subject of a seminar that will bring together researchers and public officials experienced in commanding positions, such as former justice minister José Eduardo Martins Cardozo and former public security minister Raul Jungmann. The speakers will address the role of justice organs and political institutions in combating these crimes, as well as proposals to reform the area. Organized by political scientist Rogério Arantes, a participant in IEA’s Sabbatical Year Program in 2019, the event “Organized Crime and Corruption in the Vision of Researchers and Public Officials” will take place at the IEA on September 2, from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Seminar analyzes the social effects of environmental damage to the Amazon

On September 2, at the IEA, researchers who have traveled the state of Roraima and met riverside communities will present their impressions and what they consider as the main threats to the lifestyle of these populations. At the seminar “Amazon: Peoples and Projects,” which starts at 9 am, professors from federal universities of Roraima, Rondônia, and Ceará will show that human interference in the Amazon region, especially in the form of deforestation and wildfires, cause immediate and visible damage to the physical integrity of communities and to the economic cycles based on gathering, fishing, and cassava cultivation.

Eda Tassara addresses hybrid warfare and the use of rhetoric to destabilize memories

Military warlike strategies that use “the memory-destabilizing rhetoric” as a weapon are at the heart of what is being called hybrid warfare. The theme will be discussed on September 3 and 4, from 2:00 pm, by physicist and psychologist Eda Tassara. According to her, the phenomenon means “the hijacking of knowledge by a political-economic project,” as opposed to the Enlightenment. “Hybrid Wars: The Evil Use of Knowledge” will take place at the IEA.

Course addresses aspects of the history of psychological knowledge in Brazilian culture

On a course to be held at the IEA between September 9 and 11, daily from 2:00 pm to 6:00pm, aspects of the history of psychological knowledge in Brazilian culture will be the subject. According to the lecturer, researcher Marina Massimi, the activity focuses on the “study of aspects of worldviews related to psychological concepts and practices.” Such knowledge can be reconstructed from historical investigations that consider sources, objects, methods, and actors in the process of knowledge construction and psychological practices in Brazil. The time frame covers the period from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century.

ESTUDOS AVANÇADOS

New issue of "Estudos Avançados” features articles on Goethe, violence, and afro-descendant writing

Issue 96 of IEA’s journal “Estudos Avançados” is available (in Portuguese, for now) on SciELO virtual platform and in print. The publication features three dossiers that address the following subjects: afro-descendant writing and emancipation, violence in Brazil and Latin America, and German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. The current affairs section presents two emerging themes: the concept of coup d'etat, and invasion of privacy and exploitation of personal data by technology companies. Articles about two specialists, Ana Maria Primavesi (agroecology) and Sérgio Milliet (culture), make up the section entitled “Presences.” Finally, the section “Contemporary Poetry” includes a collection organized by Alberto Martins.
