The artists' view of female participation in the arts and misunderstandings in science

The 7th and 8th meetings of the series "The Relationship Between the Knowledge of Art and Science: Gender, Neocolonialism, and Sidereal Space" will take place on September 12 and 13, from 2:00 pm, in the IEA Auditorium. On the 12th, the theme will be "On Fragility, Lack of Rigor, Misunderstandings of Science, and Landscape Distortion." On the 13th, the presentations will be about "The Matriarchy of Pindorama - The Impossibility of Silence." Organized by the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science, and by USP's Dean Office of Research, the series will have fortnightly activities until December.

Conference discusses the 18th-century Italian natural philosophy

Professor Marie Elice Brzezinski, from USP's Institute of Biosciences (IB), will give the conference "Lazzaro Spalanzzani and the 18th-century Italian Natural Philosophy" on September 13, at 11:00 am. According to the lecturer, the controversy between John Nedham and Spallanzani about the origin of "animalcules" was motivated by their metaphysical theses. "For Needham, it was the vegetative force of organic matter, while for Spallanzani, the precept of biological individuality." The event has been organized by the Institute's research group Khronos: History of Science, Epistemology, and Medicine.

Cycle on the challenges of education in risk society begins next week

On September 17, at 9:30 am, the seminar "Education and Sustainability" will open the cycle "The Various Faces of Risk and the Challenges of Education in Contemporary Society." The presenters will be Marcel Bursztyn, from the University of Brasília's Center for Sustainable Development, and Pedro Jacobi, coordinator of IEA's Environment and Society Research Group. According to the cycle's organizer, Mauricio Pietrocola, a professor at USP's School of Education and currently a participant in IEA's Sabbatical Year Program, "education can play a key role in overcoming the deadlocks between improving the quality of life and preserving the environment in a conflict scenario, which includes civilizing risks."

Education as a strategy to combat the impacts of climate change will be discussed at a meeting

The meeting "Education and Climate," to be held on September 18, at 2:00 pm, will bring together representatives from academia and society to give voice to people who engage in education and climate-related activities in light of youth mobilization. The organizers point out that "demonstrations and climate strikes have been increasingly organized and more frequent around the world, mainly led by students of basic education in European countries." The event is an initiative of the USP Global Cities Program, a São Paulo Research Foundation's 5-year thematic project on environmental governance entitled FAPESP MacroAmb, and Fundación Avina's LatinAdapta Project.

José Saramago's "The History of the Siege of Lisbon" will be debated in a round of conferences

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of José Saramago's "The History of the Siege of Lisbon," which ends the first literary phase of the Portuguese writer, IEA's collaborating researcher Jaime Bertoluci and Jean Pierre Chauvin, a professor at USP's School of Communications and Arts (ECA), have organized a round of conferences. On September 18, from 8:45 am to 5:20 pm, they and three other researchers will analyze Saramago's work from multiple perspectives and the interface between literature, history, and philosophy.

Press freedom as the foundation of democracy will be the theme of a seminar

Press freedom as one of the pillars of democracy and the challenges of Brazilian journalism will be themes of the seminar "Press Freedom and Democracy," which will take place on September 19, at 9:30 am, in the Alfredo Bosi Room. The event has been organized by the IEA in partnership with USP's Superintendence of Social Communication. The profile of the guests, all journalists, is divided into two groups: those who work in press media and those who work in academia. They will make up two panels, namely "Is there democracy without a free press?" and "The challenges of the present and the future."

New democratic mechanisms of public engagement will be discussed at a seminar

The challenges that various democracies have experienced over the past decade have stimulated the creation of innovative mechanisms for public engagement, such as mini-publics and citizen juries. Ian Walker, executive director at newDemocracy Foundation, will address the issue at the seminar "Democracies and Democratic Innovations," which will take place on September 19, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The moderators will be political scientists José Álvaro Moisés and Sergio Fausto.
