Senators and researchers discuss how to deal with marijuana, alcohol, and electronic cigarette among teens

The meeting "What Parents and Educators Should Know About the Recreational Use of Marijuana, Alcohol, and Electronic Cigarettes" will be held on October 4, at 3:00 pm, to promote discussion on strategies for preventing the use of these substances and formulating policy for the issue. Two parliamentarians will be among the debaters: Brazilian Senate President Davi Alcolumbre and Senator Lucas Barreto (PSD-AP). The mechanism of action of these substances in the health of adolescents and young adults will also be addressed at the event.

The comparison between Brazil and Turkey in the context of the international democratic recession

Sociologist Brasílio Sallum Jr., from USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH), and political scientist Karabekir Akkoyunlu, a visiting professor at USP's Institute of International Relations (IRI), will be the presenters at the seminar "Brazil and Turkey, the Quality of Democracy in Question," on October 7, at 9:30 am. They will discuss the risks of a possible weakening of democracy and the challenges to its elementary institutions in these two countries. The event has been organized by the Martius Chair for German and European Studies, and by IEA's Quality of Democracy Research Group.

The emancipatory character of African descent writing will be addressed at a seminar at the IEA

"Black Ink, White Paper: Afro-descendant Writings and Emancipation," a dossier published in the 96th issue of IEA's journal "Estudos Avançados," will be debated by its authors at a seminar on October 8, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. According to historian Helena Pereira Toledo Machado, a former participant in the Institute's Sabbatical Year Program, the purpose of the set of texts is to propose approaches that allow reading this writing, "emphasizing both its production context and its visceral connection with the process of building a powerful narrative voice that is equally collective and individual."

UN-Habitat's Urban October will feature a seminar of the UrbanSus cycle

A seminar of the cycle "UrbanSus: Urban Sustainability," which is organized by IEA researchers, will be part of the annual Urban October, a campaign of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat). It will take place on October 10, at 9:30 am, and its theme will be "Innovation and Digital Technology in Cities." The activity is an initiative of the Institute's USP Global Cities Program in partnership with the Nove de Julho University (UNINOVE), USP's Centre for the Study of Violence (NEV), and the Brazilian Association of Software Companies (ABES), with institutional support from UN-Habitat.

Public health is the theme of the second meeting of a cycle that addresses the challenges of education in risk society

The seminar "Risk and Public Health," to be held on October 15, from 9:30 am to 4:00 pm, will be the second activity of the cycle "The Various Faces of Risk and the Challenges of Education in Contemporary Society," coordinated by Mauricio Pietrocola, a professor at USP's School of Education and currently a participant in IEA's Sabbatical Year Program. The presenters will be preventive medicine specialist José Ricardo Ayres, from USP's School of Medicine, and epidemiologist Naomar Almeida, a visiting professor at the IEA, and former president of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA) and the Federal University of Southern Bahia (UFSB).

The creator of the Brazilian website "E-farsas" (E-scams) talks about how to identify fake news

On October 11, at 2:00 pm, the event "What Are Fake News?" will be held as the fifth meeting of the cycle "What Does Ignorance Have To Teach?," organized by the IEA and the Science Question Institute (IQC). The presenter will be Gilmar Lopes, creator of "E-farsas," the first Brazilian website dedicated to fact-checking, which has been in operation since 2002. Lopes will talk about the characteristics of fake news and the tools available on the internet to identify them. Examples of electronic rumors will be presented and the consequences of their sharing will be discussed.

Colloquium on probability theory will be open to the public upon registration

The "2019 Interdisciplinary Colloquium on Probability Theory: Philosophy, Physics, and Mathematics at Crossroads" will run from October 8 to 10. Although the submission period is closed for those wishing to participate with a presentation, it will be possible to attend the event upon registration. The activity is an initiative of IEA's Research Group Philosophy, History, and Sociology of Science and Technology, the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) and the Department of Philosophy of USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH). Daily communications sessions will take place at the Department of Philosophy in the morning, while the conferences will be held at the IEA in the afternoon.
