UBIAS network launches call to receive essays on a post-COVID-19 world

The network UBIAS (University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study) has an open call to receive essays on the theme "How will/should the world change? The corona crisis as an interdisciplinary challenge." Researchers from all areas and countries may participate with contributions written in English and sent by the end of May. According to the network, which represents 44 institutes of advanced studies based on universities, there are increasing indications that the world will look different after the crisis and that globalization will be questioned in many areas." And that "in times of deep uncertainty, science is asked to look to the future and to flank a rational discourse about how to react to the current global crisis."

New section of IEA's website features essays on the COVID-19 pandemic

The huge impacts of the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus are being analyzed by researchers from the IEA, either with a look at the different aspects of the disease related to it or the crisis resulting from it. The analyses are presented in a new section of the Institute's website and address immediate and future effects in different areas, such as health, economy, education, and personal relationships.

USP researchers are part of a group that seeks to improve public policies against COVID-19

Glauco Arbix, coordinator of IEA's Observatory of Innovation and Competitiveness (OIC), is at the head of a network of 40 researchers who analyze and suggest the improvement of public policies for governments to face the novel coronavirus pandemic. Through OIC, counting on the support of the IEA and other institutions, the group sends out weekly thematic bulletins. The material is also available on the Institute's website. The issue of April 17 presents analyses on the vulnerability of Brazilian workers during the current crisis.

Guilherme Ary Plonski and Roseli de Deus Lopes take office as directors of the IEA

Professors Guilherme Ary Plonski and Roseli de Deus Lopes took office on April 12 after being elected to the positions of directors of the IEA for 2020-2024. They obtained 94 votes from members of the institute's electoral college on March 10. To dispute the votes, the elected representatives have presented the management program "Innovation, Excellence, Openness."

2019 Activity Report is available on IEA's website

IEA's activity report for 2019 has recently been published on the Institute's website (Portuguese only). The document highlights the main academic events of the year, the groups and researchers that joined the IEA, and the themes that were in evidence. The publication also lists all the seminars and conferences held in São Paulo and at the centers in São Carlos and Ribeirão Preto, presents the publications and issues of the journal "Estudos Avançados," and brings the Institute's transaction history.

Seminar on sociology of sport addresses gender and player transfer

The presence of women in football and the renewal of sports culture will be some of the topics discussed during an online seminar that will address concepts of sport related to sociology, culture, and philosophy. Centered on thematic axes - body, violence, gender, and diplomatic relations -, the meeting to be held on April 28, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, will also discuss aspects of the professional football transfer market. The "5th Interdisciplinary Meeting in Sociology of Sport: Body, Violence, and Gender" is coordinated by Marco Bettine, a collaborating researcher at the IEA, and organized by the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Football and Playful Modalities (LUDENS).
