Issue #99 of "Estudos Avançados" presents a comprehensive dossier on the COVID-19 pandemic

With 17 articles by 47 researchers from different institutions, the main dossier of the new issue of IEA's journal, launched this month, presents an overview of the characteristics and consequences of the world-wide pandemic, both from the point of view of public health and the country's social reality. The issue also includes a set of texts on the Brazilian youth, written by educators and sociologists.

CULTURE

Néstor García Canclini will be the new holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science

Considered one of the leading Latin American social scientists, cultural anthropologist Néstor García Canclini, from the Metropolitan Autonomous University in Mexico City, will develop the project "The Institutionality of Culture in the Current Context of Sociocultural Changes" starting on September 1, with the support of a postdoctoral researcher who is being selected by the Chair. Canclini will replace Paulo Herkenhoff and Helena Nader, chairholders in 2019.

IEA receives applications for the 2021 Sabbatical Year Program

USP professors have until August 7 to send their application to develop a research project lasting from six months to one year at the IEA in 2021. The program is a partnership between the Institute and the Dean for Research.

COVID-19

Ubias, ZiF, and IEA publish essays on changes in a post-pandemic world

The network of University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS), Bielefeld University's Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), and the IEA have been publishing articles on the prospects for change in the post-pandemic world since June. From Brazil, nine researchers have been selected so far.

Webinar to discuss work changes in the post-coronavirus world

On August 12, at 4:00 pm, a debate will address the main changes that are taking place in the labor market amid the pandemic of COVID-19. Researchers will seek to identify trends, prognosis, and desires, in particular on people's well-being and health. The online seminar is being organized by the Study Group "Impacts of New Morphologies of Work on Workers' Lives."

"Fake news" bill to be subject of online debate between jurists and journalists

The webinar "Freedom of Expression and the Right against Disinformation: the 'Fake News' Bill" will gather journalists and jurists on August 12, at 10:00 am, to discuss limitations and the scope of Bill 2360/20, approved in the Brazilian Senate on June 30 and currently under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies. Among the topics to be discussed there are freedom of expression and information, privacy, transparency, and law enforcement.

Experts compare health systems in São Paulo and Atlanta during the pandemic

Researchers in the areas of public health and medicine will discuss the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic by comparing the health systems of Brazil (public and free) and the USA (private) in a webinar on August 14, at 2:30 pm. The reference will be the service to the population in the cities of São Paulo and Atlanta. The presenters participate in a project of Emory University in the Bom Retiro neighborhood in São Paulo.
