Seminar on the future of journalism launches the Oscar Sala Chair

"Press, Technology, and the Future of Journalism" is the theme of the online seminar for the inauguration of the Oscar Sala Chair, to be held on October 9, at 9:30 am. The presenter will be journalist Rodrigo Lara Mesquita. Headquartered at the IEA, the chair is one of the activities provided for in an agreement between USP and the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee (CGI.br). The event will be hosted by Walter Bender, former executive director of the Media Lab at the MIT. Demi Getschko, Ana Estela de Sousa Pinto, Bianca Santana, and Caio Túlio Costa will participate as debaters while Carlos Eduardo Lins da Silva will be the moderator.

Néstor García Canclini takes over as holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science

At the online conference "The Institutions Out of Place," cultural anthropologist Néstor García Canclini, from the Metropolitan Autonomous University of Mexico City, will be officially appointed as the new holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science, a partnership between the IEA and Itaú Cultural. The virtual ceremony, which will take place from 5:00 pm on October 6, will also feature a conversation between Canclini, José Teixeira Coelho Netto, a professor at USP's School of Communications and Arts (ECA), and Carla Pinochet Corbos, from Alberto Hurtado University, Chile.

Course gathers researchers on cultural relations between Brazil and France

Registration for the free online course "Brazil-France Relations: Images, Intermediations, and Reception," which will start on November 4, will be open from October 5 to 16. There are 100 vacancies. Organized by IEA's Brazil-France Research Group, the course is intended to retake the memory of the relations between the two countries and to detect and analyze their possible resonances in Brazilian thought, culture, and literature in the 19th and 20th centuries. Members of the group will present the results of their research projects in five scheduled classes.

Researchers debate the new rights agendas that have emerged on the peripheries

IEA's Study Group on Critical Urban Theory will hold the online seminar "Right to the City / Right to Life: The Outskirts" on September 28, at 10:30 am. The presenters will be Cibele Rizek (IEA and USP's Institute of Architecture and Urbanism in São Carlos), Emanuelle Góes (Black Women's Institute - ODARA), Helena Silvestre ("Movimento Luta Popular"), and Jorge Luiz Barbosa (IEA and Fluminense Federal University). Mediation will be in charge of Paulo César Xavier Pereira (IEA and USP's Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism). According to the group, racialized social inequalities have deepened with the pandemic, especially in the peripheries, but it is precisely in them that renewed rights agendas emerge.

Antônio Nóbrega addresses Brazilian poetic rhymes

At the webinar "Popular Brazilian Rhymed Poetry: Conversation with Antônio Nóbrega," on September 29, at 2:30 pm, the founder of Instituto Brincante, who is also a scenic artist and violinist, will speak about popular Northeastern poetry, which is the theme of his 2019 album "Rima." His presentation will be debated by anthropologist Marcela de Queiroz Bertelli and by psychopedagogue Raquel Martins de Assis, both from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). The mediator will be Marina Massimi, a senior professor at the IEA and coordinator of the Research Group on Time, Memory, and Belonging, organizer of the meeting.

Conference will discuss the influence of sociological aspects in the scientific dissemination of the CERN

Graciella Watanabe, from the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), will propose a discussion on how particle physicists at the European Nuclear Research Organization (CERN) produce actions to publicize their work to the general public. In a conference entitled "Scientific Dissemination in the Light of the Sociology of Science: The Social Game at the CERN Laboratory" the researcher will take the works of Pierre Bourdieu as her main reference for analyzing the issue. The event will take place on October 1, at 11:00 am, and has been organized by IEA's Research Group Khronos: History of Science, Epistemology, and Medicine.

Event presents practical actions for the conservation of primates of the Amazon

In the "2nd Videoconference of Operation Primates: Challenges for the Conservation of Amazon Primates," on October 2, at 2:00 pm, the presenters will discuss practical actions undertaken in defense of species in the Amazon. The operation is an interinstitutional initiative to catalyze the implementation of National Action Plans for the conservation of endangered species. The organizers of the event are IEA's Research Group Amazon Transformation: History and Perspectives, Operation Primates, and the National Center for Research and Conservation of Brazilian Primates (CPB/ICMBio).

Meeting discusses the worsening of gender inequalities in cities due to the pandemic

The current assessment is that the pandemic has accentuated the conflicts and challenges resulting from gender inequalities, with women being especially impacted mainly due to the worsening of economic and social inequalities. The issue will be discussed at the online seminar "UrbanSus United Nations: Gender Inequality and Intersectionality in Cities during the Pandemic," to be held on October 8, at 4:00 pm. The presenters will be Wânia Pasinato (IEA), Luciana Fukimoto Itikawa (FIAM-FAAM), and Juliane Cintra de Oliveira ("Ação Educativa").
