IEA directors' inauguration ceremony highlights fight against denialism

At the official inauguration ceremony of Guilherme Ary Plonski and Roseli de Deus Lopes as director and deputy director of the IEA, held on November 6, USP's President Vahan Agopyan highlighted the contribution to be made by the Institute to fight "negationism, and the setback and the attack on science." Plonski argued that, in parallel to working on traditional themes, such as climate issues and access to quality education and health, the Institute will adopt a transforming role, being not only a laboratory of ideas, but "a studio of ideas."

Institute celebrates its 34th anniversary with statements from managers and researchers

The 34th anniversary of the IEA was celebrated at the official inauguration ceremony of the new director, Guilherme Ary Plonski, and the new deputy director, Roseli de Deus Lopes, on November 6. The event included speeches by Lopes and the previous director, Paulo Saldiva, besides statements from the first director of the Institute, Carlos Guilherme Mota, the coordinators of IEA's centers in Ribeirão Preto and São Carlos, Boards members, and researchers.

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

USP Global Cities opens public call for researchers

Anyone wishing to carry out post-doctoral research or collaborate at the USP Global Cities Synthesis Center has until November 23 to enroll in the selection process. Those selected may work with or without a grant from a funding agency. The scholarship will be awarded to the researcher. The duration of the projects should be from six months to five years. The minimum workload for postdoctoral students is 960 hours and at least 20 hours per week. For collaborating researchers, the workload is 12 to 40 hours per week.

"Estudos Avançados" reaches its 100th issue and continues the dossier on the pandemic

Published since 1987, the journal "Estudos Avançados" is reaching its 100th issue in this four-month period, the highlight of which is the second part of the dossier on the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the publication's editor, Sergio Adorno, the articles are characterized by the choice of fundamental issues present in the public debate, density of perspectives, and bibliographic basis in documentary sources. The issue also contains texts on Florestan Fernandes, Celso Furtado, Max Weber and Beethoven, and on the origin and constitution of institutes for advanced studies in the world.

OSCAR SALA CHAIR

Vint Cerf, one of the creators of the Internet, talks about the challenges of the network

Mathematician and computer technician Vint Cerf, considered one of the founders of the Internet for co-creating the basic protocols for integration and use of the network (TCP / IP), will participate in the webinar "The Challenges of Internet Governance" to explain how the rules of the Internet have been developed, what their fundamentals are, and why they were and are still needed. The activity, to be held on November 16, at 10:30 am, will be the second one promoted by the newly created Oscar Sala Chair. Following Cerf's speech there will be a debate with other specialists, who will address several aspects of the challenges that the interconnected network currently faces as a tool for a possible threat to democracies, and the strong concentration of economic and social power of the platforms.

The event will be broadcast in both Portuguese and English.

Marine Brazil

The book "Amazônia Azul: Brasil Marinho," organized by David Zee and Fabio Scarano, will be released during a homonymous event on November 16, at 6:00 pm. The work examines the history, the present and the future of the Brazilian marine extension. The organization is from the UNESCO Chair on Ocean Sustainability.

Brain drain

The webinar "¿Fuga o Circulación de Cerebros? Tópicos y Tendencias Recientes sobre las Redes de Diásporas de Personas con Estudios Avanzados," on November 17, at 9:30 am, will address current trends and post-pandemic scenarios regarding the efforts of several countries to obtain benefits from the so-called brain drain.

Chilean ports

The USP Global Cities Synthesis Center will hold the meeting "Latin American Port Development: Cases of Chilean Ports" on November 17, at 2:00 pm. The presenters will be researchers from several Brazilian and Chilean universities.

Women

IEA's research group "nPeriferias", and the Research and Study Group on Public Policies for Social Inclusion, based at USP's School of Arts, Sciences, and Humanities (EACH), will hold the webinar "Young Women in Power: Women in Building Alternatives: the Power We Want" on November 18, at 7:15 pm.

India

"Hindu Nationalism as a State Policy in Contemporary India" is the theme of Mariana Faiad Batista Alves, from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), who will talk about the components that have influenced the origin and development of Hindu nationalism and the current developments on November 19, at 2:00 pm.

Education

Maria Teresa Santos, from the University of Évora, will be the presenter of the webinar "Ethics and Education: Arendt and the Responsibility for the Common World," on November 19, at 5:00 pm. The event is part of the cycle "More Education, Please! Dilemmas and Challenges in the Construction of Knowledge."
