The institutions out of place, according to Néstor García Canclini

On October 6, 2020, at the online conference "The Institutions Out of Place," cultural anthropologist Néstor García Canclini, from the Metropolitan Autonomous University of Mexico City, was officially appointed as the new holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science, a partnership between the IEA and Itaú Cultural. Canclini said that the term "cultural institution" does currently not apply only to museums, libraries, cinemas, theaters, and concert halls, but also encompasses applications such as WhatsApp and services such as downloading movies and e-books. For him, the digital institutions socialize as much as families, schools, universities, and factories, "but they also desocialize what has been articulated by the classic institutions or generate disputes in the ways between different generations and educational levels, and in the way in which they are inserted in the community, urban, and na tional forms that continue to contain us."
