Oscar Sala Chair opens registration for postdoctoral candidate selection

Postdoctoral fellows from any unit of USP campuses in the city of São Paulo can participate in the selection process of a researcher to join the Oscar Sala Chair with a ten-month scholarship. Candidates must apply via online form until 3:00 pm (São Paulo time) on July 2. The selected researcher will work in collaboration with semiotician Lucia Santaella, current chair holder. To be able to participate, the researcher must have the consent of their research supervisor. Activities should start on July 15.

Today's institutionalized culture is the subject of a series of the Olavo Setubal Chair

At the seminar "The Institutionality of Culture and Sociocultural Changes," to be held on July 15, at 2:00 pm, the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science will launch its series "Cadernos de Pesquisa" (or "Research Notebooks"). The theme of the first volume bears the same name as the event. It will contain the first results of the research project coordinated by anthropologist Néstor García Canclini, holder of the chair, and studies by the postdoctoral students Sharine Machado Cabral Melo and Juan Ignacio Brizuela.

UNIVERSITY

Colloquium defends a collaborative and pan-disciplinary university open to society and other kinds of knowledge

The structure and performance of the new chairs at USP served as the starting point to an institutional evaluation of Brazilian universities in the colloquium "About the University: Críticism with Soul," held on June 22. Organized by the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science, and the Chair of Basic Education, the event was part of the 1st IEA Inter-Chair Meeting and featured presentations by Néstor García Canclini, Naomar de Almeida Filho, and Martin Grossmann, in addition to the coordination of Lucia Santaella.

Renato Janine Ribeiro, an honorary professor at the IEA, is elected president of SBPC

Renato Janine Ribeiro, a professor of ethics and political philosophy at USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH), and an honorary professor at the IEA, was elected president of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science (SBPC) on June 21. Former Minister of Education, Janine has been a member of the Institute's Board and coordinated the Research Group "The Future Beckons Us." After his election, he declared to “Jornal da USP” that it is now "time to unite everyone" and create "a package of everything that can contribute to the future of Brazil."

Highlights of IEA's 35-year history

The history of the São Paulo LGBTQ Pride Parade

The trajectory and struggles since the creation of the São Paulo LGBT Pride Parade, in 1997, is recounted in a testimony by Fernando Quaresma, one of the creators of the event, in a video produced in November 2014. The content is part of the project Human Rights Cartography of São Paulo, organized by the UNESCO Chair on Education for Peace, Democracy, Human Rights, and Tolerance with the objective of mapping the places where human rights have been conquered in São Paulo.
