JOURNAL

Culture, sustainability, and religious spaces are themes of the latest issue of "Estudos Avançados"

Issue #103 of IEA's journal "Estudos Avançados," launched this month, features the dossiers "Culture and Society," "Hybrids of Knowledge II," and "Religious Spaces II." According to the publication's editor, Sérgio Adorno, the first dossier "seeks to approach the possible or perhaps even lost meanings of the present times" from different methodological perspectives applied in various thematic and conceptual areas. The other two sets of articles complement the respective dossiers that began in the previous issue. The digital version can be downloaded free of charge from the SciELO website (Portuguese only).

IEA launches book on sustainable alternatives for the Amazon

"Amazon: Alternatives to Devastation" is a sample of what "can be done to radically change the way in which this fundamental part of the territory is treated," according to the organizers of the book, geographer Wagner Costa Ribeiro and sociologist Pedro Roberto Jacobi, both members of IEA's research group Environment and Society. With eight chapters written by 16 researchers - including Ribeiro and Jacobi - and 147 pages, the publication has been produced by the Institute and can be downloaded free of charge. It is dedicated to the memory of geographer Neli Aparecida de Mello-Thery, author of one of the chapters who died in April. She was an expert in environmental policy and sustainability.

Highlights of IEA's 35-year history

Floram Project, a 1990 proposal to help slow the greenhouse effect

On June 30, 1990, there was a seminar to launch the Floram Project – Forests for the Environment, developed at the IEA (watch the video in Portuguese). The central proposal was the reforestation of 200,000 km2 in Brazil (2.3% of the territory) in 30 years. It would be a contribution to a worldwide effort to sequester CO2 present in the atmosphere in order to delay the risks of the greenhouse effect by 50 years. During the period, the development of carbon-free energy sources and uses would be prioritized. The origin of the project was a challenge by Wilfred Bach, from the University of Münster, to the Brazilian delegation at the Climate and Development congress, in 1988, in Germany: "Why doesn't Brazil, with such a huge territorial extension and a climate that allows the rapid growth of forests, develop a large-scale reforestation project aimed at fixing the excess carbon floating in the atmosphere in phytomass?" The dean of USP at the time, José Goldemberg, requested the IEA to initiate studies on the issue in May 1989, leading to the Floram Project, coordinated by geographer Aziz Ab'Saber (1924-2012). The full text of the project and additional comments were published in issue #9 of the journal "Estudos Avançados" (Portuguese only).
