Conceição Evaristo and Ruha Benjamin discuss gender, race, and class in technology

Writers Conceição Evaristo, holder of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science, and Ruha Benjamin, a professor at the Department of African American Studies (Princeton University), will debate the different forms of gender, race, and class discrimination, especially in the area of technology, on July 12, at 4:00 pm. The webinar "Women, Race, and Technology" is being co-organized by the Oscar Sala Chair and the Olavo Setubal Chair.

RESEARCH

Olavo Setubal Chair launches the results of a census carried out in communities neighboring USP

The results of a census carried out between 2019 and 2021 in the communities neighboring both USP campi in São Paulo were released last week at an event that brought together the main actors of the project Democracy, Arts, and Plural Knowledge. Data is gathered in digital and printed versions, as well as in a website. The work was coordinated by Eliana Sousa Silva, holder of the Chair in 2019.

Open call for postdoctoral studies in food security

IEA's Nutrition and Poverty Research Group is selecting a postdoctoral researcher to work on the theme "Food Security and the USP 2122 Project". The research project will address the food scenario in contemporary Brazil and the prospects for achieving food security in the country, having the year 2122 as a vision of the future. Registration for the selection process runs until July 14.

COURSE

Course on public policy concerning mental health and chemical dependencies opens enrollment

The course "Public Policy on Mental Health, Alcohol, and Other Drugs of the Unified Health System (SUS): Rights, Territories, and Social Participation" is open to candidates for its 150 vacancies. In eight virtual meetings, which will take place on Thursdays, public mental health policy and its intra and intersectoral articulations in community health care networks will be discussed. Among other topics, the following ones will be addressed: history of policies in the field, context of access and guarantee of rights, the Brazilian Mental Health Conferences, with emphasis on the participation of users and their families, the intersectionality of actions, and organizational strategies to expand social participation. Enrollment until July 22.

NEW MEMBERS

New research group will address international political economy, democracy, and decarbonization

The objective of IEA's research group on International Political Economy, Varieties of Democracy, and Decarbonization, whose creation was approved on June 22, is to develop a political analysis of Brazil's responses to globalization in order to situate and interpret the country's public policy options. The project is part of an initiative dedicated to the comparative study of emerging market democracies undertaken by the International Political Economy Research Committee of the International Political Science Association (IPSA).

Carlos Cioce Sampaio is the new visiting professor at the IEA

"Eco-socioeconomic Impact of Graduate Studies in Environmental Sciences in the Sustainable City" is the theme of the project by IEA's new visiting professor, Carlos Cioce Sampaio, from the University of Blumenau (FURB) and the University of Southern Santa Catarina (UNISUL), who has previously been a collaborating researcher at the USP Cities Global Synthesis Center. To measure postgraduate education as a promoter of development, the project proposes to bring together a set of initiatives by Brazilian researchers in the areas of environmental sciences, and urban and regional planning.

Marcia Aparecida de Oliveira joins the IEA as a senior professor

A retired professor from USP's School of Nursing (EE), Marcia Aparecida Ferreira de Oliveira had her application for admission and activity plan accepted by the Institute's Board within the scope of the Senior Professor Program on June 22. Her project includes teaching and extension activities, in addition to other initiatives linked to the Interdisciplinary Research Group on Public Policies in Mental Health (GPIPPSAM), of which she is vice-coordinator.

This conference will historically contextualize Pascal's work, addressing how infinity was thought of in the 17th century, and will discuss the status of "infinite" and "indefinite" in his mathematical theory. Watch live.

An event to explain the pre-study for AmIT, aimed at contributing to the socioeconomic development and quality of life of the Amazonian population in synergy with the conservation and valorization of the forest and rivers. Watch live.

August 3, at 3:00 pm - Conversations on Darwinian Theory (5th meeting)

Social anthropologist Mauro William Barbosa de Almeida, from the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), will talk about Darwinian theory with economist José Eli da Veiga (IEA) and anthropologist Jaroslava Varella Valentova (USP's Institute of Psychology). Watch live.
