RESEARCH

Nature-Based Solutions are the subject of a new study group at the IEA

Brazil is a source of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). However, in order to capture this potential, there is a need to organize information and concepts associated with the theme, defining a theoretical structure and thus establishing which opportunities can be identified and developed. This need has led IEA's Board to approve the proposal to create the Study Group on Nature-Based Solutions under the coordination of professors Weber Antonio Neves do Amaral and Francides Gomes da Silva Junior, both from USP's Luiz de Queiroz School of Agriculture (ESALQ).

Claudio Pinhanez is the Institute's new visiting professor

Ethical Computational Processing of Brazilian Indigenous Languages is the theme of the project of the new visiting professor at the IEA, Claudio Pinhanez, a researcher at IBM Research's laboratory in Brazil. He proposes the development of artificial intelligence and natural language processing (NLP) techniques to support the documentation of Brazilian indigenous languages. To apply NLP techniques in this work, Pinhanez intends to explore the use of pre-trained and multilingual base language models. If the objectives are not achieved in this way, the alternative is to collect large amounts of linguistic data to train a new model.

EVENTS

Nick Couldry gives a conference on the impacts of the symbolic power of digital platforms

For British sociologist Nick Couldry, from the London School of Economics and Political Science, the structure that appears to be a second nature, daily presented by information and communication technologies, "is strong enough to destroy lives although written in the 'soft' language of symbols." The prospects for a world less prone to toxicity and more likely to generate solidarity and cooperation will be discussed by him at the conference "The Space of the World: Digital Platforms and the Prospects for Human Solidarity in the 21st Century," on April 27, at 2:00 pm. The event is organized by the Oscar Sala Chair.
