Alfredo Bosi
Born in São Paulo in 1936, Alfredo Bosi is considered one of the greatest literary critics in Brazil. He is a retired professor of Brazilian Literature from USP, an essayist and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, being also recognized for his social, cultural, educational and environmental activism. As an engaged intellectual, Bosi has supported the struggles for the Brazilian re-democratization and always defended the reduction of social inequalities, ethical principles, respect for popular cultural traditions, and freedom of thought and research of the university. His academic career was fully developed at USP, where he joined the Faculty of Philosophy, Sciences and Letters in 1955, graduating in Neolatine Letters in 1958, becoming a professor in the same year, a doctor in Italian Literature in 1964, a full professor in 1970 and a full professor in Brazilian Literature in 1985. He retired in 2006, although he was still an active participant at the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH), and the editor of IEA's journal Estudos Avançados, a role that he has played since 1989, until 2019. At USP, in addition to having been a researcher and a professor, Bosi was the director (1998 to 2001) and deputy director (1987 to 1997) of the IEA. At the Institute, he coordinated the Education for Citizenship Program (1991-1996). He was a member of the coordinating committee of the Simón Bolívar Chair, an agreement between USP and the Latin American Memorial Foundation from 1992 to 1996. He coordinated the Public University Defense Commission in 1998 and the Lévi-Strauss Chair (an agreement with the Collège de France from 1998 to 2004), organized the collective document "The Presence of the Public University" (2000), and presided over the committee that prepared the USP Code of Ethics in 2001. Bosi was the first president of the USP Ethics Committee (2002 to 2003) and coordinated the Literature and Culture Study Group from 2006 to 2013. Bosi conducted research in the United States, as a fellow at the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation in 1986, and in France, where he was a researcher at the Institut des Textes et des Manuscrits Modernes for three months in 1990. He was the holder of the Sérgio Buarque de Holanda Chair in Social Sciences of the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme in 2003 and was a guest lecturer at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in 1993, 1996 and 1999. He has also lectured in other French institutions (Université de Aix-en-Provence, Université Paris-Sorbonne, Maison des Sciences de l'Homme and Institut des Hautes Études de l'Amérique Latine), Italy (Collegio Pio Brasiliano, Università di Roma "La Sapienza", Institute Brazil-Italy, Centro di Studi Brasiliani of the Brazilian Embassy in Rome and Academia della Crusca), United States (Yale University), Cuba (Casa de las Américas), Spain (Universidad de Salamanca) and Uruguay (Universidad de la Republica).
