Carlos Afonso Nobre

Graduated in Electronics Engineering from the Aeronautics Institute of Technology (December 1974), Carlos Afonso Nobre obtained a PhD in Meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (January 1983). He began his professional career at the National Institute of Amazonian Research (INPA) in 1975. He worked as researcher at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) from 1983 to 2012. He exercised directorship, management and coordination role of scientific institutions and R&D policy: President of the Federal Agency for Post-Graduate Education-CAPES (May 2015-May 2016); Director of the National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters-CEMADEN (February-May 2015), Secretary of Policies and Programs of Research and Development of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation-MCTI (Fev. 2011- Fev. 2015); Director of the Earth System Science Center-CCST/INPE (2008-2010) and Director of the Center for Weather Forecasting and Climate Studies-CPTEC/INPE (1991-2003). He is a member of the Joint Steering Committee of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP). He also exerted leadership role of scientific experiments, among others: Program Scientist of the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia-LBA (1996-2002); Brazilian Program Scientist of the Anglo-Brazilian Climate Observations Study-ABRACOS (1990-1996), He was chair of the International Advisory Committee of the Program to Protect the Rain Forests of Brazil-PP-G7 (2006-2008). He was MCTI?s representative of the Amazon Fund Steering Committee.). He was chair of the Scientific Committee of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme-IGBP (2005-2011). Chair the Boards of Directors of the Brazilian Research Network on Climate Change-Rede CLIMA (2011-2014) and the Brazilian Panel on Climate Changes (2009-). He was the Coordinator of the FAPESP Research Program on Global Climate Change (2008-2011) and Scientific Director of the Rede CLIMA (2008-2011). He is Scientific Director of the National Institute of Science and Technology for Climate Change. He served in CAPES as coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Post-Graduate Programs Commission (2006-2008) and represented Brazil in the Board of Directors of the International Institute for Applied System Analysis-IIASA (2011-2016). He served as a member of the International Scientific Advisory Panel of Climate Change Adaptation Program, the Netherlands (2008-2011). He was a member of UN Secretary-General?s High Level Scientific Advisory Panel on Global Sustainability (2013-2016). His research interests are Earth System Science and Environmental Sciences, acting on the following themes: atmospheric sciences, climate, meteorology, Amazon and climate modeling, biosphere-atmosphere interaction, climate change, and natural disaster. He was a Professor of Dynamic Meteorology, Ocean-Atmosphere Interactions and Biosphere-Atmosphere Interaction at INPE?s Post-Graduate Program in Meteorology and is a Professor of Introduction to Earth System Science at INPE's Doctoral Programs in Earth System Science. He formulated 27 years ago the hypothesis of Amazon "savannization" in response to deforestation and has been studying how climate and land use changes may affect the rainforest. He has supervised over 29 MSc?s and Ph.D. H index and citations (December 2017): 43 / 9,345 (ISI); 66 / 20,700 (Google Scholar).He participated in several reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In particular, it was one of the authors of the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, which in 2007 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize along. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the World Academy of Sciences and foreign member of the US National Academy of Sciences.He was awarded the Von Humboldt Medal of the European Geophysical Union (2009), the Volvo Environmental Prize (2016) and IIIAS Scholar (2016).
