Lilia Schwarcz holds a bachelor's degree in History from the University of São Paulo (1980), a Master's degree in Social Anthropology from the State University of Campinas (1986), a Ph.D. in Social Anthropology (1993) and a Master's degree in Social Anthropology (1998) from the University of São Paulo. She is currently a full professor at the University of São Paulo (since 2005), editor of the Companhia das Letras publishing house, member of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Advanced Studies of UFMG, and member of the IHGB. She was a visiting professor and researcher at Leiden, Oxford, Brown, Columbia (Tinker Professor) and Princeton universities, where she was a Global Professor until the year 2014. She has experience in Anthropology and History, with emphasis on Anthropology of Afro-Brazilian Populations, Markers of Difference and History of the Brazilian Empire, focusing mainly on the following themes: Brazilian monarchy, slavery, symbolic constructions, history of anthropology, ethnicity, image constructions and social identity. |
