Hugh Matthew Lacey

Hugh Lacey is Senior Researcher and Scheuer Family Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Swarthmore College, PA, USA, where he has taught since 1972. He has also been frequently visiting USP and other universities in Brazil since 1969. He holds a BA in Mathematics and a master in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Melbourne, and a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from Indiana University. He was visiting professor at USP on several occasions (1973, 1996, 2000 and 2004), as well as at UNICAMP (1977), PUC-SP (1992) and Universidad Centroamericana, in El Salvador (1991). Among his books there are 'A Linguagem do Espaço e do Tempo' (Editôra Perspectiva, 1972), 'Is science value free?' (Routledge, 1999/2004), and 'Values and Objetctivity in Science: Current Controversy about Transgenic Corps' (Lexington, 2005). Lacey currently works mainly with issues of interaction between scientific practices and values, relations between facts and values, and the interaction between scientific and ethical questions in current ethical discussions on technoscience (recently focusing on transgenic seeds).
