Brazilian institutes for advanced studies gather to discuss cooperation and the creation of a forum
The 2nd National Meeting of Brazilian institutes for advanced studies took place on August 23 and 24 in Porto Alegre, at the Latin American Institute for Advanced Studies (ILEA) of UFRGS. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss cooperative projects between the institutes, the routing of a development program with research funding agencies and the launch of the "Carta of Porto Alegre", which creates the Brazilian Forum of IASs. Another discussed issue was the participation of Brazilian IASs in the University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS) network, of which USP's IEA and the Centre for Advanced Studies (CEAV) of Unicamp are already part. Before the meeting, the representatives of the IASs have met with the dean of UFRGS, Professor Carlos Alexandre Netto.
Besides Professor José Vicente Tavares dos Santos, director of Ilea-UFRGS, professors Maurício Alves Loureiro, director of the Transdisciplinary Advanced Studies Institute (IEAT) of UFMG, José Sérgio Leite Lopes, director of the Brazilian Center Studies (CBAE) of UFRJ, Murilo Silva Camargo, researcher at the Center for Multidisciplinary Advanced Studies (CEAM) of UNB, César Barreira, from the Department of Sociology and director of the Center for the Study of Violence at UFCE, Diana Pereira Araujo, director of the Mercosur Institute for Advanced Studies (IMEA) of Unila, and Juan Guillermo Creus, senior lecturer of the IMEA-Unila and former director of Ilea-UFRGS have also attended the meeting.
The 1st meeting of Brazilian IASs happened at the 1st Advanced Studies and University Workshop (watch the video in Portuguese), held at USP's IEA on October 31, 2011, with the participation of the then current directors of the IEA (César Ades), Ilea-UFRGS (Juan Guillermo Creus), CEAV-Unicamp (Pedro Paulo Funari), Ieat-UFMG (Maurício Loureiro) and CEAM-UNB (Ricardo Caldas).
