Cycle presents results of the 2022 Sabbatical Year Program

The results of the research projects carried out by USP professors participating in IEA's Sabbatical Year Program in 2022 will be presented at events from May 24 to 26 and May 31. This will be the second edition of the Contemporary Investigative Journeys cycle. Two conferences and four seminars will address the following topics: education during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, Brazilian addiction to drugs, health consequences of the impacts of human action on the environment, Brazilian archeology in Israel, linguistics, and the performance of women in diplomacy and academia. There will be face-to-face, online, and mixed events. The series is co-organised by the IEA and USP's Dean of Research and Innovation, which supports the program.

Mariko Murata talks about the complexity of the museum decolonisation process

"Decolonising Museums and Exhibitions on the Indigenous Ainu in Japan" is the theme of the conference to be given by Japanese sociologist Mariko Murata (Kansai University) on May 29, at 10:00 am. The reference for the exhibition will be the decolonisation effort undertaken by the Upopoy National Ainu Museum and Park, inaugurated in 2020 as the first of a national nature dedicated to the ethnic group, and the controversies raised by the procedures adopted by the museum. The event is organized by IEA's Research Group Fórum Permanente: Cultural System Between Public and Private in partnership with the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture, and Science.

Advanced School on Science and Innovation Diplomacy accepts applications until May 21

The Advanced School on Science and Innovation Diplomacy (InnScid) will have a new edition in 2023, between July 24 and August 4. Applications must be submitted by May 31. InnScid will bring together representatives from the private sector, governments, universities, and international organizations who will present theoretical and case studies on innovation and science diplomacy. Up to 80 participants will be selected, with 40 vacancies for Brazilians and 40 for foreigners. The School is co-organized by the Institute of Advanced Studies (IEA) and the Department of Political Science at USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH).

RESEARCH

Suzana Herculano-Houzel takes over the Otavio Frias Filho Chair

In her inauguration at the Otavio Frias Filho Chair of Studies in Communication, Democracy, and Diversity, on May 9, neuroscientist Suzana Herculano-Houzel (Vanderbilt University), gave the conference "As Long as it Works: For a More Optimistic View of Life Where Diversity Is the Norm," in which she presented ideas for a new book she is writing. In the ceremony that preceded the conference, USP's vice-rector Maria Arminda do Nascimento Arruda stated that Herculano-Houzel's contribution has shifted the way of formulating problem in her field: "When she challenges the assumption of the survival of the fittest, she is having a decentralized look: the look of diversity."

Project publishes technical note on climate risks in Capivari (São Paulo)

Researchers from the USP Cidades Globais Synthesis Center, based at the IEA, have published a technical note entitled "Diagnostics of Climatic Risks in Capivari (São Paulo) - Potential Strategies for Directing Adaptation Measures in Small and Medium-sized Municipalities," resulting from a project coordinated by Professor Maria da Penha Vasconcellos, from USP's School of Public Health (FSP). The work is part of the activities provided for in a contract between the IEA, the USP Support Foundation (FUSP), and the City Hall of Capivari, which also provides for monitoring the review of the city's master plan, preparing proposals to be formalized in bills, and holding workshops that contribute to engaging the population in discussions.

May 26, at 9:00 am - Multilingualism, Contact, and Linguistic Change Pointing to New Directions for the Science of Language

A meeting coordinated by Esmeralda Vailati Negrão, from USP's Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH), that will address the results achieved through her research project to describe and characterize Mina's general language. Watch live.

May 26, at 2:00 pm - The Brazilian Dependence on Drug Imports

A lecture by Leoberto Costa Tavares, from USP's Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences (FCF), on the technical, political, and social aspects of the Brazilian dependence on drugs produced abroad, and on maintaining care for the population. Watch live.

May 29, at 10:00 am Decolonising Museums and Exhibitions on the Indigenous Ainu in Japan

May 31, at 2:30 pm - Women in Diplomacy: The Insertion of Women in Diplomacy and Academia

A discussion of the meaning, trajectories, and challenges faced by women who are leaders in diplomacy and academia. French ambassador to Brazil, Brigitte Collet, and Sheila Neder, from USP's Faculty of Law (FD), will participate.

June 1, at 3:00 pm - The Humanities in the Face of the Anthropocene (5th Conversation)

Arilson Favareto (Federal University of ABC and Brazilian Center of Analysis and Planning) and Estela Neves (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) will discuss topics related to the book "The Anthropocene and the Humanities," by IEA's senior professor José Eli da Veiga. Watch live.

June 6, at 9:00 am - Launch of the book "Rewriting Judicial Decisions in Feminist Perspectives: The Brazilian Experience"

In-person and online conversation with the authors of the book, which brings together collaborative works by professors, researchers, and law students from various higher education institutions in the country. Watch live.
