The network of University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS) has opened the selection process for the 4th edition of the Intercontinental Academia (ICA), whose theme is "Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence." Early and mid-career researchers with a doctorate and fluency in English can apply. Applications from researchers linked to any academic institution or with links to industry, non-governmental organizations, artistic or other institutions are welcome, provided that they have a position equivalent to that of a professor or researcher.

A virtual meeting will take place in June 2021, followed by two immersion meetings - the first in October 2021, in Paris, and the second in June 2022, in Belo Horizonte. The French Network of Institutes for Advanced Study (RFIEA) and the Institute of Advanced Transdisciplinary Studies (IEAT) at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) are the hosts.

The Intercontinental Academia brings together young researchers from different countries and fields of study to study a single topic. In 2015, the IEA hosted the first phase of the program's inaugural edition, organized in partnership with the Institute for Advanced Research (IAR) at Nagoya University.

Submissions must be made through applications-ica4@rfiea.fr until March 31, 2021.

Mentors and fellows
At the meetings, selected participants will have the chance to discuss research topics with a notable group of mentors, who were previously invited to participate in this edition of the Intercontinental Academia.

Candidates affiliated to USP must undergo prior selection by the local scientific committee. If the University endorses the application and it is approved in the final selection, then USP will be responsible for supporting the participant for the immersive meetings. UBIAS network
Started in 2010, the Ubias network currently congregates around 50 institutes for advanced study around the world and has the proposal to promote an environment for the exchange of experiences between researchers from different areas, cultures, and backgrounds, creating a productive space for innovative research. One of the most successful initiatives of the Ubias network is the Intercontinental Academia (ICA), in which the scientific exchange between generations, disciplines, cultures, and continents takes place around a major theme. As a representative of the IEA in this international interdisciplinary research project, Ventura will be at the Institute on June 17, from 2:00 pm, to talk about the topic she has been working on for two years and to share her experience of participating in the ICA. There will be a discussion of the learned lessons, including a reflection on the ways the team of participating research fellows have found to overcome the challenges of interdisciplinary work. The various possibilities for collaboration will also be approached, as well as the definition of some work fronts, the motivation to take part in the project, and the innovative format of the edition's workshops.

The project

The ICA is an initiative of the UBIAS network that brings together young and senior researchers to study a single subject from different perspectives during two extensive meetings. The first edition, centered around "Time", was organized by the IEA and the Institute for Advanced Research at Nagoya University in 2015 and 2016. The second edition, on "Human Dignity," was promoted by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Institute for Advanced Studies and the Center for Interdisciplinary Research at Bielefeld University in 2016.

The institutes for advanced study at the Nanyang Technological University and the University of Birmingham have beenthe hosts of the third and so far last edition of the project. 18 researchers with different academic backgrounds and nationalities were selected to study the different perspectives of the theme "Laws: Rigidity and Dynamics" between 2018 and 2019.

Profile

Carla Ventura holds a degree in International Relations from the University of Brasília (UnB) and a Law degree from the São Paulo State University (UNESP), where she has also obtained her Masters in International Law. In addition to these, she holds a PhD in Administration from USP.

She is currently a professor of the Department of Psychiatric Nursing and Human Sciences at USP's School of Nursing at Ribeirão Preto, where she teaches about human rights, health, development, mental health, bioethics and nursing legislation, among others. She also coordinates a global health research group, leading a team of undergraduates, masters, doctors and postdocs.

Ela discutirá as lições apreendidas, refletindo sobre os caminhos construídos pelo grupo de pesquisadores para lidar com os desafios do trabalho interdisciplinar, as diversas possibilidades de colaboração entre seus participantes, assim como a definição de algumas frentes de trabalho que surgiram ao longo do processo, como as de cidades inteligentes, inteligência artificial e trabalho interdisciplinar.

Ventura também relatará sua experiência no projeto, descrevendo sua motivação, as características dos participantes, a organização e o formato inovador dos workshops da edição organizada pelos IEAs das universidades de Birmingham, Reino Unido, e Nanyang, Cingapura.

A Intercontinental Academia é uma iniciativa da Rede Ubias que reúne pesquisadores jovens e seniores para estudar um único tema durante um período de imersão. O IEA-USP participou das quatro reuniões e integra o Comitê de Diretores da Ubias desde que ela foi criada, em 2010. Atualmente, o Instituto é um dos dois vice-coordenadores da rede.

Encontros anteriores

Em outubro de 2010, o Instituto Freiburg de EstudosAvançados da Universidade de Freiburg, Alemanha, recebeu a primeira conferência de diretores. O evento discutiu o tema "Institutos de Estudos Avançados Baseados em Universidades em Perspectiva Global: Promessas, Desafios e Novas Fronteiras" e marcou a criação a Ubias.

Os outros três encontros aconteceram: no Instituto Israel de Estudos Avançados da Universidade Hebraica de Jerusalém, em março de 2013; no Instituto de Estudos Avançados em Humanidades e Ciências Sociaisda Universidade Nacional de Taiwan, em novembro de 2014; e no Instituto de Estudos Avançados da Universidade de Birmingham, Reino Unido, em junho de 2016.

With the theme 'Time,' the edition has gathered 13 young participating researchers in two meetings that took place at the IEA-USP in April 2015 and at the University of Nagoya's Institute for Advanced Research (IAR) in March 2016. The documentary of the São Paulo phase is also available on the website. A third film that compiles both phases will also be released.

The 12-minute long video reporting the activities held in Nagoya presents testimonials of the majority of the young researchers on the importance of the interdisciplinary dialogue regarding the concepts of time. They also talk about the production of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on 'Time' as the final outcome of the initiative. The other testimonials are from Hisanori Shinohara, director of the IAR, and Martin Grossmann, director of IEA during the São Paulo phase of the project, both members of the Senior Committee of this first edition.

Editions

The Intercontinental Academia is an initiative of the University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study network (UBIAS). The partnership between the IEA and the IAR for the inauguration of the project has been sponsored by Itaú Cultural and supported by five institutions: FAPESP, CNPq, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study (WIAS) and the Center for Advanced Studies at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich. The edition also featured Coursera (where the MOOC will be available soon) as a partner.

The project is currently in the final preparations for the start of the third edition, whose theme is 'Laws: Rigidity and Dynamics,' with meetings at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in March 2018 and at the University of Birmingham's Institute for Advanced Studies in March 2019.

The second edition was entitled 'Human Dignity' and was held at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Israel Institute of Advanced Studies in March 2016, and at at University of Bielefeld's Center for Interdisciplinary Research in August of the same year.

O Comitê Científico da terceira edição da Intercontinental Academia (ICA) selecionou Carla Aparecida Arena Ventura, professora do curso de Enfermagem da Universidade de São Paulo, em Ribeirão Preto, para participar das duas fases da ICA, que acontecerão na Ásia e na Europa. Carla havia sido uma das três pré-selecionadas pelo IEA. Em Cingapura, o evento será de 19 a 28 de março de 2018. Perfil

Carla Ventura é formada em Relações Internacionais pela Universidade de Brasília (UnB) e em Direito pela Unesp, onde também adquiriu seu mestrado Direito Internacional. Além desses, ainda possui doutorado em Administração pela USP.

Atualmente, é professora do Departamento de Enfermagem Psiquiátrica e Ciências Humanas da Escola de Enfermagem da USP de Ribeirão Preto, onde leciona sobre direitos humanos, saúde, desenvolvimento, saúde mental, bioética e legislação da enfermagem, entre outros. Ela também coordena um grupo de pesquisa sobre saúde global, liderando uma equipe de graduandos, mestres, doutores e pós-doutores.

The Scientific Committee of the third edition of the Intercontinental Academia (ICA) has selected Carla Aparecida Arena Ventura, a professor of Nursing at USP's campus in Ribeirão Preto, to participate in the two phases of the program, which will take place in Asia and Europe. Partindo do pressuposto de que o conceito de leis tem diferentes significados em diferentes contextos, culturas e indivíduos, os organizadores querem provocar a reflexão, análise e comparação para elucidar a origem das leis e as tensões entre elas. “Seja examinando as leis elaboradas pelos humanos, leis naturais ou a evolução da teoria que saem do caos e da complexidade para as leis, existe potencial para interações intensas entre as disciplinas e a visão derivada disso”, defendem.

O programa

The rigidity and dynamics of laws will be the theme of the 3rd Intercontinental Academia (ICA), scheduled to take place in March 2018 in Singapore and March 2019 in Birmingham, under the organisation of the Institutes of Advanced Studies of the University of Birmingham and Nanyang Technological University.

The IEA-USP will indicate a researcher to the final selection process stage, to be conducted by the organisers. In case of approval, the Institute will cover the costs of airfare, while accommodation and on-site expenses will be paid by the hosts. The focus is on people who are in their early / mid-career, up to 15 years of doctoral completion, and who conduct research in academia, industry, the third sector, or other organisations. The footage of the online course that the participants of the first edition of the Intercontinental Academia (ICA) are producing on the theme "Time" started this Monday, March 6. In Ubatuba, at the "Clarimundo de Jesus" Research Base of USP's Oceanographic Institute (IO), five young researchers who are part of the project will be focused until March 10 to record the lessons of the four sections that make up their Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). With a total of two hours, the course shall be hosted at Coursera's database.

The group of 13 participants is being represented by David Gange, from the University of Birmingham; Eduardo Almeida and Helder Nakaya, both from USP; Nikki Moore, from Rice University; and Valtteri Arstila, from the University of Turku. During this week, they will be supervised by members of the ICA Senior Committee Martin Grossmann, from USP's School of Communications and Arts (ECA), and Regina Markus, from USP's Institute of Biosciences (IB).

The ICA is a program of the University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (UBIAS), a network that brings together 36 institutes of advanced studies from universities of all continents. The IEA-USP and Nagoya University's Institute for Advanced Research (IAR) are responsible for the first edition. The project brings together young researchers from different nationalities and areas of knowledge to develop studies on a common subject. Its accomplishment was possible thanks to the partnership and support of the Deans for Research of USP and Nagoya University, besides Itaú Cultural, which finances a major part of the costs through the programme Global Networks of Young Investigators of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Art, Culture and Science.

The researchers arrived in Ubatuba after having prepared the scripts to be filmed by a video producer. After the recordings, the course is expected to be completely ready to air in June.

Em Ubatuba, na Base de Pesquisa “Clarimundo de Jesus” do Instituto Oceanográfico (IO) da USP, cinco jovens pesquisadores que integram o projeto ficarão imersos até o dia 10 de março para gravar as aulas das quatro seções que comporão o Massive Open Online Course (Mooc). Com um total de duas horas de duração, o curso deverá ficar hospedado na base da Coursera.

Bastidores da gravação do Mooc
Nikki Moore se prepara para iniciar a filmagem

Os jovens pesquisadores estão sendo representados por David Gange, da University of Birmingham, Inglaterra; Eduardo Almeida e Helder Nakaya, ambos da USP; Nikki Moore, da Rice University, Estados Unidos; e Valtteri Arstila, da University of Turku, Finlândia. Durante esta semana, eles terão a supervisão dos membros do Comitê Sênior da ICA Martin Grossmann, da Escola de Comunicação e Artes (ECA) da USP, e Regina Markus, do Instituto de Biociências (IB) também da USP.

A ICA é um programa da University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study (Ubias), rede que congrega 36 institutos de estudos avançados de universidades de todos os continentes. O IEA-USP e o Instituto de Pesquisa Avançada da Universidade de Nagoya (IAR), no Japão, são os responsáveis pela primeira edição. O encontro em São Paulo aconteceu de 17 a 30 de abril de 2015, e a segunda fase, em Nagoya, de 6 a 18 de março do ano passado.

O projeto reúne 13 jovens pesquisadores de diferentes nacionalidades e áreas do conhecimento para desenvolver estudos sobre o tema “tempo”. Sua realização foi possível graças à parceria e apoio das Pró-Reitorias de Pesquisa da USP e da Universidade de Nagoya e do Itaú Cultural, que financia boa parte dos custos por meio do programa Redes Globais de Jovens Pesquisadores da Cátedra Olavo Setubal de Arte, Cultura e Ciência.

Durante todas as etapas da ICA e mesmo após os encontros presenciais, os jovens trabalharam na criação do roteiro do Mooc e chegaram a Ubatuba com os textos prontos do que será filmado por uma produtora de vídeo. Após as gravações, a expectativa é que o curso fique completamente pronto para ir ao ar em junho.
