Artur Avila, winner of the Fields Medal in 2014, an award considered the "Nobel Prize of Mathematics", will be honored on December 10 at a session at USP's Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library, as an initiative of the IEA-USP, USP's Institute of Mathematics and Statistics (IME) and USP's Institute of Mathematics and Computer Sciences (ICMC).

On October 15, the three institutes organized the first honor to the medalist. The seminar Artur Ávila's Fields Medal and the Brazilian School of Mathematics had the participation of three researchers of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA): Marcelo Viana, Maurício Peixoto and Welington de Melo. Avlia holds his masters and PhD from IMPA, where he also takes parts in the Chair Armínio Fraga, alongside his activities as director for research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in France.

The honor to Avila will be the opening ceremony of the I Brazilian Congress of Young Researchers in Pure and Applied Mathematics. It will take place at 9 am. At 9.30 am, Ávila will give a conference and at 10.30 am he will participate in a conversation with another illustrious Brazilian mathematician, Jacob Palis, also a researcher at IMPA, where he has been director, and current president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.

The event will be broadcast live on the web.

CONGRESS

Many new Brazilian PhDs in mathematics eventually move away from their training groups. Due to the continental dimensions of the country, they enter universities that are distant from the main research centers. This detachment often hinders the development of their research and, consequently, their career advancement. The need to minimize that risk and to provide an appropriate framework for sharing experiences and research results has created the I Brazilian Congress of Young Researchers in Pure and Applied Mathematics. After the opening ceremony at USP's Brasiliana Guita and José Mindlin Library, the congress will continue on December 11 and 12 at the IME.

EXCHANGE AND COLLABORATION

According to the organizers, the main objective of the congress is to encourage new research, and the exchange of ideas and collaboration among participants. Alongside to this, a fundamental mission of the meeting is to propose the creation of an organization of young mathematicians for their ideas and difficulties to gain public visibility in order to increase their representation in scientific societies and in Brazilian society in general.

Further organizers of the congress are the National Institute of Science and Technology in Mathematics (INCTmat) and UNESP. Sponsorship by CNPq, CAPES and FAPESP. The initiative has the support of the Research, Innovation and Diffusion Center of Mathematical Sciences Applied to Industry (Cepid-CeMEAI), the Brazilian Mathematical Society (SBM), the Brazilian Society of Applied and Computational Mathematics (SBMAC), the integration Program of Industrial Mathematics, the Real Sociedad Matemática Española (RSME) and the Sociedad Española de Matemática Aplicada (SEMA).
