Sérgio Rouanet addresses modernity at the opening of the Olavo Setubal Chair

Political scientist, philosopher and diplomat Sérgio Paulo Rouanet will give the inaugural conference of the Olavo Setubal Chair of Arts, Culture and Science, of which he is the first holder. Rouanet will address the influence of modernity in the economic, political and cultural contexts through the ideas of sociologists Max Weber and Manuel Castells, and philosopher Jürgen Habermas. "Modernity and its Ambivalences" will take place on May 17, at 9.30 am, in the former University Board Room. Comments will be in charge of jurist Celso Lafer, philosopher Renato Janine Ribeiro and sociologist Barbara Freitag. The chair is a project of the IEA in partnership with Itaú Cultural Institute. There will be live broadcast over the web.

Paulo Herkenhoff participates in a Q&A session at the IEA

The IEA's Research Group "Fórum Permanente" will promote a question-and-answer session with Paulo Herkenhoff, cultural director of the Art Museum of Rio (MAR) on May 9, at 9.30 am. The meeting will enable a lively debate on contemporary art and art museology in Brazil. The questions will be asked by members of the research group and by guests. Further questions may be previously sent by anyone to sedini@usp.br. The debate will be held in the IEA Events Room and broadcast live over the web. The video of the meeting will be available on the websites of the IEA and the "Fórum Permanente" afterwards.

Seminar analyzes the difficulties for the governance of the Amazon

"Contradictions in the Amazon Governance" is the theme of the seminar which will take place on May 11, at 2.30 pm, in the IEA Events Room. This first meeting of the series "Challenges for a Sustainable Amazon in Contemporaneity" is organized by the IEA's Research Group on Public Policies, Territorialities and Society, the Institute for Development and Sustainability (IDS), and the German House of Science and Innovation (DWIH-SP). The participants will discuss the obstacles to the joint efforts of federal entities in the governance of the Amazon, a result of the wide disparities in the financial capacity of each entity to implement public policies and the lack of constitutional mechanisms to encourage their cooperation.

Nanotechnology in Brazil discussed by academia, business and the government

Nanotechnology will be the theme of the next meeting of the Strategic Workshops, a series of events organized by the USP's Dean of Research (PRP) with support from the IEA and the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences (ACIESP). "Nanotechnology: Current Scenario, Innovation and Regulatory Framework" will take place on May 12, from 9.50 am to 5.20 pm, in the IEA Events Room. Nanotechnology is multidisciplinary, combining several fields of knowledge and different sectors - academia, business and government agencies. The workshop will bring together representatives of universities, of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and of the pharmaceutical industry, among others. There will be live broadcast over the web.

Experts discuss opportunities and challenges for the agroecological transition

The IEA's Research Group on Philosophy, History, and Sociology of Science and Technology will hold the seminar "Transition to Agroecology: Possibilities and Obstacles" on May 16, at 2 pm, in the IEA Events Room. The goal is to understand how the transition from agribusiness to agroecology takes place. According to the model of the interaction between scientific activities and values (M-CV), there are a mutually reinforcing relations between the adoption of a methodological strategy and the support of certain values. After a seminar that has presented the research strategies of agroecology, the speakers will now explore the values of agroecological practices that have these mutually reinforcing relations with the methodologies of agroecological research.

Issue #86 of the journal 'Estudos Avançados' brings a dossier on metropolises and health

The latest issue of the IEA's journal 'Estudos Avançados', lauched in April, brings a dossier of seven articles on metropolises and health. Paulo Saldiva, director of the Institute, has contributed with the dossier by co-writing one of its articles and giving editorial advice. All the further six articles have been written by authors who see a strong relationship between the spread of diseases and the lifestyle of big cities. "This dossier takes up one of the journal's goals: the combination of the objective study of Brazilian social problems with consistent and responsible public policy proposals," explains Alfredo Bosi, editor of the publication.
