Anthropogenic modification of landscapes has led to rapid losses of biodiversity and the declines in the benefits provided by natural ecosystems that all humans depend on. These benefits, known as ecosystem services, underpin a wide range of human needs, including food production, climate regulation, flood regulation, and cultural values. Ecosystems service benefits for humans depends on the ability of natural systems to supply ecosystem services, the demand for ecosystem services by people, and the flow of ecosystem services from areas of supply to areas of demand. Critically, ecosystem service supply, demand, and flow are influenced by how landscape change modifies the spatial structure of landscapes (i.e., landscape composition and spatial configuration) and this in turn influences ecosystem service benefits. There have been some recent conceptual and empirical advances in understanding the role of landscape structure for ecosystem services. However, these focus either only on specific components of the supply-demand-flow chain of ecosystem service provision (e.g., only supply), or do not explicitly derive relationships between landscape structure and ecosystem service provision. Consequently a more holistic framework is needed to be able to develop landscape-level predictions of ecosystem service benefits under landscape change that can inform environmental policy development.

This Workshop will tackle this challenge by bringing together a interdisciplinary team of researchers from the University of São Paulo (USP) and São Paulo State University (UNESP), and the Federal University of ABC (UFABC), subsequently referred to as the São Paulo Team, and the University of Queensland (UQ), subsequently referred to as the UQ Team. The aims of the project will be to:

  1. Develop a novel conceptual framework that links landscape structure to the supply, demand and flow of ecosystem services,
  2. Using data from ongoing projects in Brazil and Australia, empirically test our conceptual framework,
  3. Identify the environmental policy implications of the outputs of Aims (1) and (2), and
  4. Develop a long-term collaborative working group that will compile and synthesise international data on landscape structure/ecosystem service relationships.
