During the Academy of International Affairs (North Rhine-Westphalia/Bonn), researchers and diplomats reflected on disinformation in the light of digital technologies. The aim was to theorize and analyze the role of states and geopolitics in spreading false messages with experts from academia and politics.
In these reports, Britta Padberg, academic coordinator of the Academy of International Affairs, discusses the theme "The geopolitics of disinformation – How social media impact International Relations."
"Propaganda, disinformation, and fake news are not new phenomena, but the medium of the new technologies has enormously increased opportunities for diffusing them. As well as states and political parties, many other players have now become involved, acting on commercial or ideological grounds, on their own initiative or commissioned by others, and exert influence effectively on domestic and international political attitudes. The intentional creation and diffusion of false reports has long since become a tried and tested instrument in international politics. This pressing topic was discussed at a high level at this year's Summer Academy of the Academy of International Affairs in Bonn, which was attended by 35 participants from 19 countries. I give a short overview about the discussion, theses and open questions." (Britta Padberg)
Next, Magaly Prado, Daniel Thilo Schroeder, Sérgio Barbosa, and José Renato Laranjeira de Pereira bring clippings of what was presented at the summer academy between the end of August and the beginning of September 2022. Prado deals with artificial intelligence algorithms within the fake news; Schroeder, on the other hand, presents the dynamics of conspiracy theory in social networks; Barbosa analyzes the logic of sharing in the format of video pills as a strategy to disseminate desinformation on WhatsApp during the election period and Pereira questions whether the transparency of AI systems in social networks is a tool in combating disinformation.
